My mixed media art works, Visual Anthologies tell the story of a life or lives, past or present. I use layering and the recontexturalization of the materials to build the history of the subject matter.
My pieces portray the good and the bad, happy or sad elements of life and sometimes, the complex subject matters of the persecution of races, religions and minority groups which are tackled with the utmost of sensitivity. To communicate the message of tolerance and understanding is imperative in my pieces.

I found Judy very early on in my life as a blogger. In fact, I 'spotlighted' her in a post just 4 months after I started my blog. What I said way back then still holds true today: "She is an extremely creative, gifted, and generous person. Her mixed media works are like no other and have an abundance of layers and depth." Turns out, that is true of Judy herself as well. I have taken a weekend workshop from her and we spend hours together each and every time she visits New York. She gets me. I get her. And we both feel completely comfortable 'telling it like it is' to each other.
I not only admire Judy's considerable talents as an artist, I admire her character as well. Much of her recent years has been spent creating Visual Anthologies, works of art which document lives lived. Her dedication to honor the subjects of her work, many of whom have been Holocaust survivors, is nothing short of remarkable. More recently she has turned the lens on her own family, spending years seeking information, and is about to share these results with us. Her art is always powerful and moving and I have no doubt that what she is soon to post on her blog will be that way as well.

Judy has been at the top of my list of favorite artists for years now. I LOVE the depth and power in her work. She puts everything she has and is into her work and it shows. I hope someday to meet her. I have a necklace pendant she sent me at one time, and think of her every time I wear it. So glad she is in your book! Very wise man, you are!

Thinking back, it was Elephants and Dreams that lead me to find out more about the artist behind such an extraordinary piece. And now I'm off to read her post at Red Velvet.
Judy's work always has so much depth, she goes to great lengths to find her information, her work is second to none. One very clever Aussie.

Passion, tenacity, creativity, honor, respect, and love are the qualities I read in Judy's stories, for her works are truly stories that will not be lost.

Not sure what to say here. I think you know what I think already. One of the three monsters of art!
The 'ordered' nature of Judy Wilkenfeld's work gives one almost the sense of the objective cataloging of the lives of others. It reminds me, in a way, of the theorizing, investigating, quantifying, categorizing, and identifying of the scientist, but, certainly, with a 'twist'. Through her research into what it has meant to be inside a particular person's skin, and the creativity she brings to bear on how she presents the details of these individual lives, Judy's work seems to strive to make this person 'real', by replacing numbers and statistics, with a kind of palpable 'visual reality'.
I love this woman.
Her work is not only inspiring, it's TRULY IMPORTANT.
...she's amazing in all media and even MORE delightful in da' flesh.
Hat's off to one of the Greats.
With all of these altered books, textural works, and just plain awesome art, I may end up inspired enough to try an altered book. The book in the first picture day is just incredible!

I left the following comment on Judy's post and thought you might be interested as well Seth: My grandparents lived in Paris during WWII and my grandfather was in the French Resistance. I have amazing family stories of his bravery in saving Jewish people. One night he hid a woman from their apartment in bed with my grandmother during a Gestapo raid on their building. I have always been pulled towards Judy's work. The power and meaning of it grabs ahold of me and I carry it with me for days after viewing photographs of her work. Imagine the effects if I got to see and touch it? Or to interact with Judy in her studio. Whooo! You were right on to highlight her on your blog...she has an astounding purpose behind her art that will affect people forever.

On a bad day, I would say I don't have a creative bone in my body. On a good day, I might work in my journal or create a piece of mixed media art. But the true creativity/originality I see in Judy's work just blows me away!! (as in "why can't I do something as original as that?") I've seen her work before today and it is still as fascinating to me as it was the first time I saw her creations. Envious...yes! In AWE...most definitely!! Thanks, for sharing her work!!

from the sample I see of Jud'y's work, I think there is a lot of life, a lot of history to her creations.

i have loved judy since the moment i laid eyes on her work. she is such a magnificent, amazing and powerful book artist. i almost had the pleasure of taking a workshop from her (class, hotel and airfare paid for and all) but wasn't able to make it. it was hugely crushing to me and i still wish i would have made it. i love judy! i will take a workshop from her one day and i am waiting on pins and needles for all she has to share.
Judy's work is captivating in it's beauty and I love how she tells her story through her art and the story of our ancestors.

I was so mesmerized with Judy's work about four years ago and literally wept when I saw her mixed media of the TWELVE TRIBES. It was such a stunning work of mixed emotions...like nothing I had ever seen before.

I love reading Judy's blog - the first time I went there, I went back and read over a year's worth of her stirring words. Can't wait to see the book!
