31 artists...31 days. Spend every day of March with me at The Altered Page to meet the 31 spotlight artists in my book The Pulse of Mixed Media: Secrets and Passions of 100 Artists Revealed
------------------------------------
My mixed media art works, Visual Anthologies tell the story of a life or lives, past or present. I use layering and the recontexturalization of the materials to build the history of the subject matter.
My pieces portray the good and the bad, happy or sad elements of life and sometimes, the complex subject matters of the persecution of races, religions and minority groups which are tackled with the utmost of sensitivity. To communicate the message of tolerance and understanding is imperative in my pieces.

I found Judy very early on in my life as a blogger. In fact, I 'spotlighted' her in a post just 4 months after I started my blog. What I said way back then still holds true today: "She is an extremely creative, gifted, and generous person. Her mixed media works are like no other and have an abundance of layers and depth." Turns out, that is true of Judy herself as well. I have taken a weekend workshop from her and we spend hours together each and every time she visits New York. She gets me. I get her. And we both feel completely comfortable 'telling it like it is' to each other.
I not only admire Judy's considerable talents as an artist, I admire her character as well. Much of her recent years has been spent creating Visual Anthologies, works of art which document lives lived. Her dedication to honor the subjects of her work, many of whom have been Holocaust survivors, is nothing short of remarkable. More recently she has turned the lens on her own family, spending years seeking information, and is about to share these results with us. Her art is always powerful and moving and I have no doubt that what she is soon to post on her blog will be that way as well.

Judy has been at the top of my list of favorite artists for years now. I LOVE the depth and power in her work. She puts everything she has and is into her work and it shows. I hope someday to meet her. I have a necklace pendant she sent me at one time, and think of her every time I wear it. So glad she is in your book! Very wise man, you are!
OH! What steep things you do!!!
Yes she is amazing - how nice for you to have that friendship!
Thank you, and looking forward to getting to know Judy and her work in greater depth, xo
Seth, I thoroughly enjoyed your 2007 post about Judy (and this post too of course:-)
Thinking back, it was Elephants and Dreams that lead me to find out more about the artist behind such an extraordinary piece. And now I'm off to read her post at Red Velvet.
Judy's work always has so much depth, she goes to great lengths to find her information, her work is second to none. One very clever Aussie.
Seth, what a wonderful write up Judy gave you! I am delighted that you two met. what an adventure that must be!
indeed, her work is amazing, complex and original.
Oh My, my hear beat a little faster when I read and saw Judy's work. Thank you both for sharing
These pieces are just gorgeous. Love all the layers in them!
Wow, I love how much meaning is behind her work. I SO appreciate her explaining the journey of her pieces.
Seth i didn't quite make it through Judy's whole post about you. But what i read was amazing. I think she is a dear , dear friend of yours.
Passion, tenacity, creativity, honor, respect, and love are the qualities I read in Judy's stories, for her works are truly stories that will not be lost.
Looking forward to meeting all these beautiful people! Judy's art has so much passion. Thanks for sharing it with us!!
Marvelous work!
It's obvious you two have great rapport.
Judy's work is so wonderful and amazing, thank you for bringing her to my attention.
xoxo
Not sure what to say here. I think you know what I think already. One of the three monsters of art!
The 'ordered' nature of Judy Wilkenfeld's work gives one almost the sense of the objective cataloging of the lives of others. It reminds me, in a way, of the theorizing, investigating, quantifying, categorizing, and identifying of the scientist, but, certainly, with a 'twist'. Through her research into what it has meant to be inside a particular person's skin, and the creativity she brings to bear on how she presents the details of these individual lives, Judy's work seems to strive to make this person 'real', by replacing numbers and statistics, with a kind of palpable 'visual reality'.
I love this woman.
Her work is not only inspiring, it's TRULY IMPORTANT.
...she's amazing in all media and even MORE delightful in da' flesh.
Hat's off to one of the Greats.
With all of these altered books, textural works, and just plain awesome art, I may end up inspired enough to try an altered book. The book in the first picture day is just incredible!
All the layers and depth to the art Judy creates tell a story visually; even at at distance - very appealing!
Thanks for the introduction to Judy - her heartfelt comments about you make it clear she adores you and your efforts to expand awareness in the art world. And she kinda likes you.
Judy's work has such depth - emotionally and visually. I am always blown away by her sensitivity and courage. She tells the truth in a beautiful way...

Judy's art is incredible. I love thick, ephemera-filled art journals.
Hello there, just been over to Judy's blog. What a great friendship you two have together through your art. Her work is stunning. Can't say enough good things about it. Thankyou again for opening up all this wonderful work by people that I would perhaps never come across.
I think she LIKES you! and her work is thought provoking, heartwarming, intriguing and downright amazing.
Wow it is a special moment here for me to meet Judy. Art and purpose make a dynamic combination. I'm just biting at the bit to go see more of her work on her blog. Thank you for introducing her to me Seth! *smiles* Norma
I don't think anyone who has seen her work on her blog or in person can come away without being amazed. Not just of the work, but the meaning behind it and how serendipitous the pieces come together.
wow..... thankyou for introducing me to this amazing lady... and a fellow aussie.. another one.
hugs

Lovely to read about your beautiful friendship with Judy. Yu are both very special people. And she another Australia. Well done, Seth!
Judy's work is incredibly moving and as satisfying as a great piece of historical fiction.
Oh Seth I am a huge fan of Judy Wilkenfeld and her blog post about you is great reading. I am going to get out my thesaurus because all the superlatives I have been throwing around are becoming trite, even though my intention is sincere. This book is going to be so powerful!
Seth,
22 here!
Thanks for the honour of having me in your book and for the wonderfully crafted "spotlight".
To each and every one of you who have taken the time to comment:
I very much appreciate your comments and have enjoyed viewing the many different perspectives on my artwork, on Seth, on me and finally on my post.
It was a pleasure to write given the subject matter. I feel gratified by the enjoyment you all got out of it. Each and every time I look at those photos of Seth and I laughing, I start giggling all over again. It is a wonderful thing.
Here's hoping that you too will get to laugh out loud with Seth in person one day.
See you all in cyberspace.
Sending you all a virtual wave and hugs, especially you Seth. xo
Thank you for sharing Judy's art with us. It is so poignant. What a great friendship you two have. Such a blessing. I left the following comment on Judy's post and thought you might be interested as well Seth: My grandparents lived in Paris during WWII and my grandfather was in the French Resistance. I have amazing family stories of his bravery in saving Jewish people. One night he hid a woman from their apartment in bed with my grandmother during a Gestapo raid on their building. They saved her life. Here is a link to some art I created to tell the story: https://picasaweb.google.com/102846550978603755385/GrandpaVriacosBook. I wanted to share it with you!
Seth, thank you for sharing Judy's work, it is strong and emotional
Seth,
I have always been pulled towards Judy's work. The power and meaning of it grabs ahold of me and I carry it with me for days after viewing photographs of her work. Imagine the effects if I got to see and touch it? Or to interact with Judy in her studio. Whooo! You were right on to highlight her on your blog...she has an astounding purpose behind her art that will affect people forever.
Darlene
PS: Seth, your photos showcase exactly who you are. The ones of you and Judy certainly tell the story of two artists with a beautiful friendship. I think impacting people's lives with humor and spirit is a gift you've been given. Lucky us that you recognized your purpose and went after it to share with the art community.
Wow...I am so moved by Judy's story, art and blog post. It's sad that she lives a world away - you both should live in the same place...kindred spirits.
I wish this month would not end. All these introductions have been just wonderful. Thank you so much!
thank you for sharing Judy with us! I hope someday that I can find a friend like you. One that understands my inner-self and who can help me to understand my outer self! You are truly amazing! Thanks again.
On a bad day, I would say I don't have a creative bone in my body. On a good day, I might work in my journal or create a piece of mixed media art. But the true creativity/originality I see in Judy's work just blows me away!! (as in "why can't I do something as original as that?") I've seen her work before today and it is still as fascinating to me as it was the first time I saw her creations. Envious...yes! In AWE...most definitely!! Thanks, for sharing her work!!
This is great to be exposed to so many different artists and their unique styles.
Aloha, Kate
thank you for sharing Judy's work in your book. i just got back from visiting her blog for the first time - amazing! i am sure it won't be the last.
from the sample I see of Jud'y's work, I think there is a lot of life, a lot of history to her creations.
I'm so impressed by Judy's work and by the depth of meaning she has conveyed through her pieces. the larger purpose of her work makes its beauty even more resonant.
This is work with lots of depth. Thanks for sharing it.
I also spotted Judy's blog very early in my blog beginnings.. and I always thought her writings and work were very thoughtful, with layers of meaning and feeling.
Love the details and the insight and how she pulls it all together. It just brings joy!
i have long admired judy and her intense work and spirit, and was blessed to take a class from her years ago. her tribute to you and story of your friendship together on her blog is so touching. what a beautiful weaving are the lives of all these artists and you, who have been so providentially brought together!!
I was so in awe of Judy's post. Her art is wonderful and the photos she shared are beyond fun with the two of you center stage. I am now a BIG fan!!
What a singular voice!
i have loved judy since the moment i laid eyes on her work. she is such a magnificent, amazing and powerful book artist. i almost had the pleasure of taking a workshop from her (class, hotel and airfare paid for and all) but wasn't able to make it. it was hugely crushing to me and i still wish i would have made it. i love judy! i will take a workshop from her one day and i am waiting on pins and needles for all she has to share.
Judy's work is captivating in it's beauty and I love how she tells her story through her art and the story of our ancestors.
Thank you for this and all of your posts Seth!
I was so mesmerized with Judy's work about four years ago and literally wept when I saw her mixed media of the TWELVE TRIBES. It was such a stunning work of mixed emotions...like nothing I had ever seen before.
I would love to win the copy of your book, Seth, with all of the artists names in it...what a remarkable feat to amass all of their signatures!
thank you!

After adoring Judy via her blog I'll not forget how I cried when I finally saw her work for real. Words will never express her creative force! Isn't it splendiferous to be 'got'?
