I was introduced to Liquid Pencil by Pam Carriker, who helped developed this line of products with Derivan. Think of this product as graphite in a bottle. There are many ways to use it but I used it as a 'paint', covering the entire surface of the panel along with layers of more traditional acrylic paint.
I first heard about Wood Icing from Mary Beth Shaw, who highlighted the product on my blog in a post for The Pulse. She had me at the word texture. Wood Icing is a versatile paste that can be used on multiple substrates and in multiple ways. On this piece, I sanded it down to create very subtle surface texture.

I'd like to try the icing! see you tomorrow afternoon?
Great to see some new art here, Seth! Love the texture on this...liquid graphite sounds right up my alley too.
Wonderful new piece Seth, and love the Take a Chance concept- both in using new tools in one's art, but also in life! What a great holiday gift this would make!!
great piece! I have a jar of wood icing that I won from MBShaw - have had no time yet to play with it...can't wait!
How fun to learn of these new products and to see them put to use so spectacularly well!
I'd say my entire art "career" has been one big "Take A Chance" experience! And ever so glad that I have and keep doing so!!!!
Makes life so much fun!
All your art rocks!!!
PS Huge Congrats on the publication date of your book! (may I say "our" book as the rest of us in it are equally proud?!)
I'm finding these two materials more and more intriguing. Perhaps I will treat myself to them for the holidays. I love this new piece -- its colors and its wonderful textures.
wow! this is a great looking piece Seth! i am constantly amazed at the attention and details you put into your background ... the texture, the colors, the EFX ... i mean, it's like a different world. if i were a miniature, i would live in your backgrounds!! i have never heard of these products, and i doubt they have it here ... but it looks real good!
that was a a well worth chance taking!
It's GONE?! What kind of thing is this? Do people NOT know that I'm trying to amass?!
That liquid pencil looks like a dream come true. I want that. I love Carriker's sensibility and method anyway. This looks like something I'd love to incorporate into my sketchbook project.
And this is all about me, after all.
You must have ESP Seth. I just bought some liquid graphite with no idea of what I intended to use it for. There are several unopened mediums that I've collected on sale over time.... must Take A Chance. Congrats on your sales.
Wood icing sounds great, must look into that one. Wonderful piece, glad it sold in a blink of an eye. xox Corrine
What a great and inspiring piece! I just pinned it on Pinterest. I have plenty of art materials that I need to take a chance with. Thanks for the inspiration! And congrats on your book! Can't wait to buy it!!
xoEsther
Graphite is such a unique color of gray and nothing else leaves a sheen quite like it. I expect the liquid variety is a bit different. Love the surface you created and congrats on a quick sale. I love to shave graphite into a big pile, smear it evenly all over a good piece of drawing paper, then use my eraser to lift and model a drawing. It's a great exericise for thinking about negative spaces.
Thanks for sharing these two (new) products to me Seth....xo
I've heard of wood icing and was also drawn by the texture possibilities. Have not yet had the chance to play with it, but will someday. Love the piece! It looks like street art. Literally! Love it!
Okay....I need to get on that list to get stuff to try out!! What fun!!! Great pieces, by the way!! I can see why the one sold so quickly!!!
Fantastic textural artwork Seth.
I like the sound of wood icing, cool product name.
LOVE these works!
Thanks for sharing your experiences with these products Seth! I'm quite intrigued by both of them, and your resulting artwork highlighting them makes me even more interested!
I have never heard of either of these.. wow.. they both sound interesting to try and I am determined to find them at the art store.. and good advice to TAKE A CHANCE!
That's cool! I have heard of wood icing, but not liquid pencil.
So cool! I ADORE your work!
