Book Guild - Chapter 9

Welcome to the fourth edition of The Pulse -- The State of the Art -- a survey in words and pictures of the online artist community. Nearly 150 artists have answered a list of questions which make up The Pulse. Their responses will be presented as a series of online and print projects. Secret Sunday was the first project and the links to all the secrets can be found on the sidebar of my blog. The Book Guild is the second project and Chapter 9 starts right now!

All artists participating in The Pulse were asked to name their favorite art books. The Book Guild will present this list, along with links, book reviews, giveaways, and interviews with many of your favorite authors. And as members of The Guild, I am hoping YOU will participate by leaving comments related to the books in each post - for example thoughts, book reviews, personal experiences, or a link back to your own blog posts that include artwork based on a project in the listed book.

Concerning the Spiritual in Art

CW Slade

Concerning the Spiritual in Art by Wassily Kandinsky

Learning by Heart: Teachings to Free the Creative Spirit

Kelly Kilmer

Learning by Heart: Teachings to Free the Creative Spirit by Corita Kent & Jan Steward

Ordinary Sparkling Moments: Reflections on Success and Contentment

Lani Gerity Glanville

Ordinary Sparkling Moments: Reflections on Success and Contentment by Christine Mason Miller

Books are hard to list, I have way too many favorites. But if I have to pick one, let it be Ordinary Sparkling Moments by Christine Mason Miller. It's an inspiring read AND the whole thing is done like a very nice art journal. She's fabulous!

Art from Intuition: Overcoming Your Fears and Obstacles to Making Art

Linda Germain

Art from Intuition: Overcoming Your Fears and Obstacles to Making Art by Dean Nimmer

The Principles of Uncertainty

Marie Danti

The Principles of Uncertainty by Maira Kalman

My favorite book this year has been Maira Kalman's "The Principles of Uncertainty" that I found by chance on clearance at Barnes & Noble! I love her art combined with her writing that reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut. The book is a pure delight.

The Power of Your Other Hand: A Course in Channeling the Inner Wisdom of the Right Brain

Vivian Bonder

The Power of Your Other Hand: A Course in Channeling the Inner Wisdom of the Right Brain by Lucia Capacchione

Sark's New Creative Companion: Ways to Free Your Creative Spirit

William Charlebois

Sark's New Creative Companion: Ways to Free Your Creative Spirit

This book is a self-help book that centers on our need to create art. I'm afraid a lot of us artists deal with issues like depression and feelings of low self-esteem. Just reading a couple of pages of any of SARK's books make me feel like I can keep on going and start creating. I have six of her books and love each one.

Dear Seth,

I am sooooo mad at you! I've spent hours and hours "browsing" through these books AND the artists' websites AND posting comments and e-mails to the artists. Shame on you! (obviously kidding about being mad, your blog is the absolute best for inspiration, love you! swak)

Blogger has been down since yesterday in my area. I was finally able to post and leave comments this evening. That's why Sunday was cut short for me. I missed my Seth fix!

I have a friend whose MIL got breast cancer and she (my friend) bought the book Art.Rage.Us. She shared it with me and it was so poignant, heartfelt, and inspiring. She kept it for herself, never intending it for her MIL, but trying to understand this disease that takes so many women (and a few men). She said the book gave her comfort when she wanted to cry and she often turns to it today, even though her MIL died New Year's eve. Thanks for sharing and exposing this book to the world.

Thanks, Seth for this chapter of the Book Guild. I forgot I had Henri's book, which I will look for when I get home from work. And Sark, I haven't looked at Sark for years. And now I need/want to look for Kalman's book. Like AP wrote: "it's a good habit to read".
Happy days,
Joanie
