The Exquisite Corpse: Part II

Last month I had the pleasure of co-teaching a five-day workshop with Holly Dean in Burritt's Rapids, Ontario - just outside of Ottawa. The workshop was originally called The Exquisite Corpse...but almost nobody signed up. We changed the name to Lovely Creatures and filled the seats. You can read about the town, the class and the experience here.

This post features the book I made in the workshop.

Measuring approximately 4.25 x 10.50 inches, this handmade book is based on The Exquisite Corpse, a game where three people draw on the same piece of paper - without seeing what the other has drawn. One draws a head, one a torso, and one a set of legs. The drawing is then unfolded to the amusement of all.

The cover includes layers of collage, acrylic paint, ink and Vintage Beeswax Baked Texture, which gives it a faux encaustic and almost leather-like look.

Inside, the concept on the Exquisite Corpse was captured in the form of a flip book in three sections - head, torso and legs.

Turning each section individually leads to a variety of combinations of exquisite corpses lovely creatures. Here are just a few...

Happy to say that in 2019, I will be offering this as a 3-day workshop called Exquisite Creatures. Stay tuned for locations.

I’ve always been intrigued by these kinds of books. Yours is fantastic! Can’t wait to learn more about the class. Would take it online for sure!

I am glad to see your final book. It is very creative and also humorous at the same time. You and Holly Dean are fantastic artists and instructors and worked so well as a team. Anyone who can take this workshop should sign up as soon as it is available! Thanks to you and Holly for everything! I loved the workshop and I learned a lot and gained confidence and definitely grew as an artist during the process of the workshop. I love the wax embossing powder and I am now experimenting with you other embossing powders, stamps and dies. I can't wait to be able to attend another workshop.

I love the color and look of this flip book! So rich and wild yet the images are so delicate. So, ummm, it looks like we're all wanting it in our own neck of the woods. For me, it's Los Angeles, or somewhere in southern CA p-p-p-please? Or like Angelika asked, online, too?

I saw your Material at the 2024 Art on Paper event in NYC last week. I loved this book and would like to attend a class on making one. How do you do the binding for each flip page?

Hey Anonymous. So happy that our paths crossed at Art on Paper. I taught this workshop one time in Canada and will likely not be teaching it again. If you want a general idea about this binding, you can register for an online class called Mini Book Madness. The binding is the same -- although here the book is larger and the pages are split into 3. Check it out at https://www.sethapter.com/product/mini-book-madness-online-class
