StudioScapes: Chapter 1

Welcome to the fourth edition of The Pulse -- The State of the Art -- a survey in words and pictures of the online artist community. Nearly 150 artists have answered a list of questions which make up The Pulse. Their responses will be presented as a series of online and print projects. Links to the first two projects, Secret Sunday and The Book Guild, can be found on the sidebar of my blog.

StudioScapes is the third project and Chapter 1 starts right now! All artists participating in The Pulse were asked to submit a photograph of a favorite art-related vignette from their home or studio.
_______________

A peek at a shelf in my studio. The vintage books are to alter, not to read -- just wanted to note that since one is The Bobbsey Twins and another is a weird Freemason Meeting Guidebook.
_______________

This photo is of my work space where I make jewelry and accessories.
_______________

My vignette is actually my desk which is nestled into the closet of my studio, complete with drying shelves and a corkboard of inspiration (including a constantly changing gallery of inspiration ~ currently a photo of Georgia O'Keeffe, bunny drawing by my nine-year-old daughter, a Cathy Cullis poetry bracelet, a Connie Geerts digital painting, gesso recipe, etc.)
_______________

The picture I chose is of a wall in my studio. Some people find it too "busy"; but I prefer it that way. It's a lot of my favorite things, sentimental memories and just inspiring things that I like to tape up there.
_______________

When friends spend the night in my guest bedroom, they are treated to some fun books on their nightstand. These are a few of my altered books that my honored guests are treated to.
_______________

I have always had a large piece of old coffee table glass covering my desk area. Rather than use an inspiration board, I have always slid cards and bits under the desk glass. My latest glass collection is of my own images, created over the last year, for the various art challenges on-line. Because my desk is in front of a 6 ft. window, the reflection of the sky and apple tree outside create an interesting effect.
_______________

A glimpse inside part of my studio supply cabinet.
_______________

This is my vintage school collection. I have an old student desk and school lockers where I store art supplies and lots and lots of old school memorabilia including a round robin "School Days" altered book. When I moved into my studio I had the intention of giving homage to the "Life is the school and love is the lesson" philosophy.
_______________

My work area (just one part of it) in our garage. I try to spread out everywhere I can.
_______________

My makeshift art space.

Just love this first edition of your StudioScapes! What a feast for all of my senses. It's like taking a peek through a keyhole into all of these wonderful participating artists studios and seeing a very special area- marked "my favorite". Really enjoyed clicking on all of the pictures to enlarge them and viewing all of the wonderful details- from word signs, to the inspiration boards, storage components, dolls, old books and altered books, special trinkets, the glass on the table, display areas for works of art, skeleton heads and those school lockers- it's all been such a treat! Seth, thanks so much for this amazing new edition within your Pulse. Just never know how you do it all!!

Oh Seth, thank you for this pulse.. I LOVE peeping into other artist's workspaces!! I'm drooling over the stuff and Oooh my, dreaming of my own room someday (that day is coming closer as my son just started studying at the university... as soon as he finds a room there, I will take his... balance the "not so nice" (him going) with the "yahoo" (me having a atelier) moment! YOu have a lovely Sunday my friend! (oh - I voted... I'll keep an I on your questions and answer them whenever I can, altho some are hard with only 2 or 3 answers possible - I'm a Libra and always "somewhere in between" and "yes, but" or "no, only if" )

I'm with William, I'm glad you can't see my space right now it looks like a bomb went off up there. I love open studios and when artists talk about their process, its a glimpse behind the magic. Thanks for initiating yet another must see Sunday tradition!!

Very cool to see where artists do their thing, isn't it ? I think these people are very tidy compared to me but I love how each one had a decor included in a "work" space. That artist eye is always engaged I guess.
Thanks as always, Seth, for connecting us in so many great ways !

What fun taking a peek at portions of other artist's studios with these vignettes! I find it quite interesting to see another artist's workspace simply because it is often a kind of extension of the artist's personality and can give you clues as to how a given artist works, and why their art looks like it does. I especially like the idea of changing images on bulletin boards or walls for inspiration. Jean's idea of placing artwork and/or other inspired snippets under coffee table glass on an often-looked-at studio table is an awesome idea. The reflection of the tree in the glass is an amazing bonus (great photo)! StudioScapes is off to great start, Seth! Looking forward to seeing more of the "heart and soul" of the creative workspace in the weeks ahead!

Well, you blew me away. I am always interested in where others create, and what wonderful tools they use to organize and keep their art supplies. Thanks for doing this. You must spend all your time sorting and organizing. What a great blog service.

I love these, it's always wonderful to take a peek into others spaces. I especially love how Elizabeth leaves out altered books for her guests to read and I was particularly drawn to Don's workspace. Can't wait to see more.

Okay, I love these. I think bits of studio are yummy. I'm trying to imagine a wall that's 'too busy'. No. not possible! However, I don't have enough wall space in the studio, because my shelves and stacks are 'too busy' !!

Thanks for all the photos, people!
