Your Blog, Your Way

What makes a blog ‘successful’ and how is success even defined? Why do some blogs seem to get all the attention, visitors, and comments while others don’t? Should an artist’s blog be devoted to art, to personal issues, or perhaps a combination of both? Can a post have too many words or not enough pictures? How can I get a bigger audience and should I even care about that? Should I pay attention to the number of hits I get and all those other stats? Will my readers come back if I take a break or change the style of my art? Is anybody even reading what I write?

If you have a blog or have thought about starting one and have ever asked yourself questions like these, then 'Your Blog, Your Way' is for you. Join me here on Create Mixed Media for my first post in a series that explores what it is to be an art blogger today.

perfect timing, or serendipitous even as "my artists" I am mentoring are just about to start blogs. Thanks for doing my job a)for me and b) better than I even could! As I am sitting here bogged down by chores and lists I am wondering how you ever find the time for all you do? and just wanted to say thank you - for your inspirational work and words and unflagging zeal & support. you rock!

Thank you, Seth. I read this over at CMM and I'm in for the long haul. I can't believe how much my life has changed because of blogging. And it can even be better! wow

Sounds very interesting.
I agree with you. Without blogging....oh my....can't hardly think about it, my world would be so much smaller...

I still can't believe I have a blog, I was terrified at first. I didn't ever think anyone would look at it, but now I have a small, but loyal following who are incredibly kind and supportive.

I started mine so that I would have a place to post whatever I wanted, be that my art, other artists, interior design, music. I love doing it, although once I started to have a following, I felt a sense of responsibility to keep things interesting and up-to-date. You're only as good as your last blog post!

I read your first in the series. This is intriguing and I will definitely be following the series! You seem to cover all aspects, just as you did in your interview on Creative Mojo. This is going to be good!

I took a break from my blog, AtelierCurioStudio, and I must say it is hard to get back into it. Today, I try to get that routine going again.I am definitely looking forward to following you on this new road you are building. And in the meantime, I plan to be more faithful to reading blogs that motivate me, yours ranking among the top ones!

i just read the first post and am really looking forward to this series. i've been wanting to overhaul my blog in a big way, and make it more "me", so these exercies will be helpful. And i love the idea that it's "your blog, your way". My favorite blogs are those where people show their true selves.

I hope you will address the issue of putting personal, most especially depressing personal, information on an art blog.

I follow or surf art blogs in order to have a positive experience. I find it extremely disconcerting to read unexpectedly that the blogger or a friend or relative has just been diagnosed with a terrible disease or learned of some other sad news (dog died, fire, miscarriage, etc). In my opinion posting such information -- often complete with gory details -- without warning is completely inappropriate yet it happens with surprising frequency.

Those are all great questions; I can't wait to find out the answers!

Interesting questions! I'm really looking forward to this series, Seth.
Blogging has become such an integral part of our lives. I could not imagine my world without blogging.
But it's a challenge, to get around to visiting all of the wonderful blogs out there. Isn't it!

i don't know how you do all that you do, seth -- you are such a rock star! i'm always 110% behind on EVERYTHING. hats off to you!
