I am happy to report that I am a guest blogger on the Spellbinders blog today. To make it even better, I will be giving away the project I have created for this tutorial. And to make it even better than that, Spellbinders is hosting a giveaway (details are at the end of this post) of some of the products I used to create my card.
Card? Yes...card. I have never made a traditional card (shared with the public at least) before but thought that today was the perfect time. As a blogger for Spellbinders, one of my goals is to introduce mixed media techniques to all the card makers and scrapbookers who use their products. Figured I should walk the walk, step inside their shoes, and make a card. Who knows -- maybe I will scrapbook next. I believe creative people come in all forms and that there is every reason for us to cross over to "the other side" -- whichever that may be.
This card was inspired by Spellbinders new Birds on a Wire die. I die cut and embossed some decorative paper to start the project. Leaving the cut paper in the die, I used the die as a stencil and inked the birds as well. You will note that one bird is in a different shade.
I selected Spellbinders A2 Curved Matting Basics B die set to create a window, using dies #4 and #6 and decorative paper.
Turning the window over, I taped the birds to the reverse side...
...so, when turned back over, they would be strung through the window on the front.
I next used the largest die in the same set to cut and emboss a different color paper to use as a base for the window.
Using adhesive pop dots to create dimension, I then adhered the window to the base.
You can better see the layers from this angle.
I then used Spellbinders Scratch Lines Texture Plate to create additional embellishment for the card. This plate deeply embossed a piece of foil so that I can add a bit of texture as well. I cut this strip into 3 pieces to place in different areas on the card.
Using Spellbinders Font One - Lowercase die set, I cut a phrase that was inspired by the birds out of decorative paper.
With all my components ready, I used a piece of decorative paper to make the card itself. I chose to cut it to a size of approximately 6 ½" x 5 ½" when folded based on the measurements of all the pieces that I had made.
Finally the time had come to put together all the individual parts and create my first card.

Hi Seth. I often visit your blog, but rarely leave a comment. I thought it was unusual to see a card by you but I love this one : ) The bird in a different colour is subtle, love it. Take care.
I hope this isn't one of a kind and that we will see more cards form you in the future in addition all all of the other magic you make.
great card!
this card was very appropriate. I often feel like that "odd man out" bird. I'm into crafts and most of friends aren't interested so I'm on my own a lot. Your card is great, as are the Spellbinders dies. I have quite a few and they always perform excellently. I like to fussy cut but having help really makes creating my cards go faster and easier. thanks. txmlhl@yahoo.com
Very textured card Seth... ;-)
Omg I so want those bird dies. I have never used S. Dies. Yay thanks for both. Pretty card too

You'd never know that this was your first time making a card! It is great. I love Spellbinders new dies they are coming out with. I had the chance to test a few out with the wonderful Ken Oliver a few weeks ago and I'm excited to see more. I was checking out some of your other blog posts and your work is amazing! I'd love to see a scrapbook page from you too, I know it would be highly texturized and fabulous. Thanks for crossing over today. :) kac2429@msn.com
Lovin' your card with the Birds on a Wire. The Matting dies and Scratch plates look very interesting!!! I would like to see the new Feather die from the CHA used in a project or card. Feathers are my addiction! I really want to get the Feathers but they haven't been in our local craft store yet. Thanks so much for sharing with us!

Love this card, you did great for a first time card maker!
Seth...you've got to do more cards!! I love what you've shown on this card! The card is clean but layered, the birds are beautiful especially the one colored different and the way you textured the ribbon or "metal" strip was awesome! I will use these things in future cards. I hope this isn't the last one we see! Spellbinders...great products to work with. Thanks! vtgrnmts1@yahoo.com
When I first looked at the card over at Spellbinders, I missed the gold foiled part, that is such a cool technique, and I didn't know about that plate. This is a great card and thanks for the step by step. I would love to win the new dies.
Really love this card! Thanks for the chance to win it.

For your first card this is amazing!! I love the One of a Kind bird! Such a great idea!! I follow you on Facebook but don't comment often. I am more of an in the background kind of gal but had to comment on this wonderful card! Whoever gets to take it home is a lucky duck indeed! Thanks for sharing your out of the box project with me! My personal goal for this year is to try an out of my comfort zone project at least once a month and I am finding that I really like some techniques that I did not think I would!! I am up to trying something new every week now because I am having such a great time experimenting!!! Just goes to show that change CAN be a good thing!

Lovely as usual!
Super card, Mr. Mixed Media Man! Welcome to our cardmaking world!
Thank you for the card you demoed. I can see by your blog it isn't as much mixed media as you normally do. I find it hard to do much mixed media for a card I am actually sending in the mail.
Fabulous card! I would love to frame it and add to my art collection!
Great card Seth! I am a card maker,(among other crafts),but recently ordered a hot wax tool & wax to try my hand at journal making. I've seen some & thought I would try my hand. Don't let this be your only card!!
This great! Not many birds on the wire as yet but soon they will be showing up! Wonderful card!~

I like how you made the birds look industrial.
Your card is a one of a kind!
Perfect card! Love the birds and saying! Put me in this giveaway!

RockinReddRobin@yahoo.com
Thanks!
Love your card! Look forward to your workshop in April.
Holy comments Seth!
I dig the birds on a wire die-actually dig anything birds! Your card is great- I do love the layers and dimensions effect. The machine you used to cut, how large of a paper does it take? and is that the largest? I thought I had all the art supplies I needed, but now you got me to thinking...thanks alot!! heehee
Love the layers and how you used the ribbon two ways. The letters are a great way to personalize cards.
Your first card is a winner! I am the other way around - I make cards, but don't often venture into mixed media. I'd like to learn more about it though, so think I'll have to pop back here again!

This is a very neat card. I like the birds on a wire die. Hope you make more cards.
great spring card love the birds on a wire and all the instructions amazing what all goes into making a card
Can't go wrong with birds, great card!
Seth- Although I spend a lot of time making cards and so I appreciate your card on many different levels not the least of which is the bird of a different color, I am fascinated by your mixed media work for the ArtExpo that you shared. My family teases me that I am a hoarder but I just know that I'll find a use (eventually) for found objects they would never think to collect- and the aging process that those objects have gone through is what I like the most. We try so hard to recreate that look artificially when we can find it naturally in found things. Your work shows this beautifully. Can't be there but hope you have a great show.-Bonnie
Great card! TFS and a chance to win.
Those gold scratch lines (oops, incorrect name) has my attention. You are one of a kind Seth and I am over here in Ohio smiling about you making a card. Now go make more.Oh yes, I would certainly love to win your first card design.
The series you made for your NY show are captivating. They are mysterious and hint of old stories to be unlocked. Look forward to seeing photos of it all.
ooooohhhhhh....I really love these birds on a wire! thanks seth for making an awesome card and a chance to win!
