Studio Table: Call for Participants

Join me on Thursday September 18th, as we celebrate the studio table: uncensored, unedited, and most likely unkempt.

So many times when we are presented with images of artist studios, they are pristine -- almost as if nothing goes on in the space. This is often true in books, magazines, blogs, and Facebook. The reality is, of course, that during the process of creating, the mess multiplies faster than the matheletes at the International Mathematical Olympiad (and there really is such a thing)!

Let's go behind the curtain, throw any feelings of shame out the window, and show the world the underside of art and craft. I'll show you mine if you show me yours!

To participate, you simply must take a picture of your work table in its full glory -- that is to say at its most messy state. On Thursday September 18th, post the picture and share a link back to my blog.

The brief: If you want to be a part of this online collaborative pop-up, please leave a comment on this post. On 9/18 when the project goes live, I will post a list of all participating artists on my blog so that you can be sure to see all the images and everybody will be sure to see yours. Feel free to let your own readers know about this project by spotlighting it on social media on or prior to reveal day. Please (and this is important) email me your link when your post goes up. It will be the only way I will know to add you to the posted list on my blog.

So funny that you've posted this, I was thinking of taking some photos of work in progress but hesitated because my studio feels messy right now. I love the idea of 'baring all'.

Kelly Jeanette Swift said...

Ok, Seth, sure will. September must be messy studio photo month because everyone seems to be posting pics of their studios.

I, totally, want to participate. My space is continually a mess. Even when it's at it's cleanest, no one else would be able to find anything! lol It's redic!

This will be easy. Waaay too easy.

jacqueline said...

Count me in please Seth. Wish I'd known about it yesterday - would have taken some photos of a mega blizzard messy studio..........should be able to recreate it easily next time I'm in!

Craftymoose Crafts said...

Since I don't really have a "studio"--I share my workspace with the washer and dryer and my storage space with closets, cabinets, the bathroom (unused)shower and basement, my small desk space is usually fairly neat. I love to peak into others workspaces, so I'll be sure to come back and visit!

Ok. Michaela and I will participate - double the mess, since we both share the same studio/art space. I am now fighting the urge to tidy up .....

Edie said...

Oh geez Seth, I don't know why I'm drawn to help you. It's been a chaotic summer of creating and I've been more focused on keeping the landscaping and house clean than cleaning up after an art session. My studio's neatness has been neglected. But ok, I'll come clean.

Quinn said...

Art is messy--just like real life! All those tidy studios---who can make art in a tidy space? Count me in!

Erin in Morro Bay said...

Count me in. I'm currently getting ready for a studio tour at the end of September, so the table is in utter chaos as art is being created!

The Creative Beast said...

I'll throw my hat in this ring!! If I can find my hat in my messy studio that is! ;)

On my blog, I have been posting a few pics of my studio due to my frustration (and SHAME!) at not having what I envision in my minds eye - the 'perfect' studio as conveyed by so many craft magazines. I am tired of feeling ashamed and frustrated with my current studio space and lack of decent storage space to be better organized because I have TOO MUCH STUFF to work with!! I know this is blocking me in many ways, so I will be glad to help BUST THE MYTH of the 'perfect studio space'!

Thank you Seth for wanting to remove the SHAME from the REALITY of working studios EVERYWHERE! =)

Annie said...

Seth, Count me in, I just cleaned my work space (kitchen), but it will get messy soon enough :-).

I do not plan to participate, but am delighted by learning that someone shares my belief that all those "studios" (in the "wherewomen" mags?) are a but too tarted-up. I'm loving the current CPS Studios issue, with more authentic studios, and I look forward to your presentation of some "real" working creative spaces.

I often post pictures of my mess - I mean studio on my blog, so YES! I am in. The only time my studio is clean is when a curator is coming! Then it sort of looks like one of those magazine spreads - the rest of the time I have to climb in!!

gem said...

Brilliant plan - I don't shy away from my "in progress" (aka chaotic what-the-heck-is-happening-here) shots, so I'd be stoked to join in on the 18th! Guess I should make sure I am working on something ;-D

I like this idea a lot, we humans are all a bit curious on how our neighbours live or in this case where our colleague crafters work. And I feel so much better now knowing that it's not just me that don't seem to be able to keep my workspace clean and neat.

Heather B. said...

Brilliant idea! I feel so grateful to know that others "make it work" in regular spaces. Its so inspiring to see how others organize and embrace the creative chaos. Our place is small so I've co-oped the dining room table as my creativity space. The ever growing craft stash seems like it is in a never ending organization process :) We had a hurricane warning a while back so a lot of my perishable stash ended up in a big bin to prevent water damage-- most of the paper is still in there. I'm in the process of indexing and cataloging all my stamps. I'm looking forward to creating cards for Halloween and fall. Count me in.

I am a very prime example of a working in an area of disarray- come and see! the amazing thing is I can create art within this space once I find the tools and materials I need. I have been lamenting "my kingdom for an art studio" for quite some time. I totally feel there are more of us in this situation than those that appear in the publications depicting artist in their gorgeous studios :)
