Take my Pulse Giveaway

Five years ago today my first book, The Pulse of Mixed Media, was released by North Light Books. It is a thrill that I will always remember.

This book is a testament to the power of the Internet. After hosting a large, online collaborative project called The Pulse for 3+ years, I received an email from Tonia Jenny, an acquisitions editor at North Light, asking if I would consider turning the project into a book. Oh that would be a yes.

The Pulse of Mixed Media is not a traditional how-to book. Rather, it focuses on the creativity that is the hallmark of every artist. 31 spotlight artists and 103 additional contributors answer questions about their art process, goals, fears, experiences, etc. The spotlight artists share self portraits and artwork based on prompts. Results from a larger survey of the online art community are also included. The level of intimate sharing that occurred in this book still blows me away.

So much has transpired since the book was released in terms of my life in art, but this book is definitely a highlight. I connected with a wonderful group of artists who are represented in this book. I experienced the thrill of an old fashioned book tour that took me from New York to Colorado to Vancouver Canada and many spots in between.

I spent time on Amazon, checking the ever-changing ranking and was over the moon when I got my first 5-star review and just bit under when my first 1-star review came through. And I got to see my book in Barnes and Noble for the first time. Think I look happy?

The video below includes excerpts from a panel discussion sponsored by the Ink Pad and held in March 2012 in NYC. Contributing artists Karen Cole, Jill Zaheer, Roxanne Evans Stout, Julie Prichard, Michelle Ward and Danny Gregory made up the panel.

Seth - I have been an invisible and silent admirer of your work for some time. I love the personal approach, and the passion, you bring to every thing you present. While I am new to hands-on creating, and not even remotely close to the caliber you bring to the bench, I am studying, observing and planning! A signed copy of your book would give me daily inspiration, and encourage me to "just do it". Thanks for the consideration!

Unknown said...

Congratulations, Seth!
It is a significant accomplishment not only to envision, compile, and research a book concept... but then proceed into that amazing, challenging, uplifting and yes, humbling phase of writing/re-writing/editing/updating the manuscript. And then? Arranging the art/images. WOWEE! As a fellow author, I congratulate you. It's such an amazing process -- and then, just when the book is out and the treasure is in your hands? The marketing and promotion starts! This is such a gratifying phase I think, to see one's vision not only take form, but be held, admired, cherished and sold to artist-dreamers such as your own true self.
Again, I congratulate you ... and I wonder this: when is another book being published?
Sincere best wishes to you.

Unknown said...

BTW, Seth, I will send you my snail mail address as a FB private message to you.

Wow, it's funny the path life takes us on, congrats on 5 years!

I love this book. I was searching for inspiration when I found this wonderful collaboration of artists and insights plus fetching photographs of the various artist's works. Thank you Seth for all your work to bring mixed media from the shadows to center stage. I was delighted when my work was shown to another artist by a family member the comment was, "Oh, she's a mixed media artist." The fact that my aim was to have my work recognized as mixed media made me feel I had hit a home run with 3 on base essentially a grand slam for mixed media and my intentional alignment as an artist.

Happy 5 year anniversary,Seth! I found your blog when I was going through a health crisis, and the community spirit of the Pulse project was a lifeline for me. I'd been out of touch with my artistic side for many years, and losing my health gave me back my art. Shortly after I started following your blog, you started taking submissions for this book. I got really brave and submitted three art pieces and answered the survey questions for the book. I was thrilled to find out that some of my responses to the questions were put in the book! It was such a wonderful feeling of validation, and I'm happy to say that I now have an almost daily art practice. I've joined some online art communities, and I'm not at all shy about posting my work. So, a great big THANK YOU!

Kathleen Harrington
