Binding Memories

This past weekend I attended a workshop taught by Leslie Marsh entitled "Binding Memories in Black and White." It was held at Lemoncholy's Studio, Kecia Deveney's wonder of a place on the Jersey shore. As you can see from the following images, Kecia's studio is an inspiration in and of itself.

Leslie Marsh is my bookmaking hero and she was kind enough to bring a sampling of her incredible handmade books to the class. While she is a stellar photographer and her books look quite amazing on her blog, they are even more spectacular in person.

The workshop focused on a bleaching technique to alter black paper using materials from nature - leaves, flowers, and the like.

Our fearless leader...

Our sensational host...

Bleaching in action..

Racking it up...

But that was just the beginning. After we made our pages, Leslie taught the long stitch technique so we were all able to bind our pages into our own books.

Pleasures of Hope, the book I created...

A sampling of my pages...

Thank you Leslie and Kecia and the whole gang. It was a great day!

What an amazing workshop by Leslie Marsh- of binding memories in black and white. Your photos of the studio are gorgeous- how special can it get to be in such a lush setting for learning such awesome techniques, selecting your book, creating those over the top nature pages and come home with such a treasure! Your photos and the pages you've made are bursting with energy - just love everything here except that I wasn't there too!!

I like the old timey feel of your pages, who knew leaves had a past! And I swear I can see little fairy faces in some of the pages (of course I am a child of the '60s). ;)
Happy days, Joanie

Thanks for posting pics of this inspiring studio space. Would love to see some pics of your studio space :) The Pleasures of Hope is an interesting concept. Would love to see more exploration of that theme. Your pages in this book are beautiful. I especially like the 2 page mulberry leaves spread and the wheat stalks page.

What a series of photos that inspire and turn one green with envy! Are you going to tell what the magic solution is in the silver tray that turns these leaves into pages or must i go to Jersey to take a class? ;-)
Love how your pages turned out.

Seth, You are magnificent. That book is beautiful, and I love it that you got to take Leslie's class. Aren't her books just yummy? Such attention to detail and craft, and they last and last. I bet she's a delight to be around, too.

You didn't put little plastic dog poopy on her chair, did you? of course not.

I have no idea why a student would do that to their teacher. Sort of.

Looking at your photos and writing was like reading a story about a treasure island. All those things hanging from the ceiling, the potted plants in the studio and plant matter you bleached with, The wooden cupboards and shelves, then the tresure at the end. Those bleached pieces are beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
