Unraveling

I am so excited to be a part of my first Art Unraveled, coming up in Phoenix, Arizona from July 29 to August 6. I am looking forward to seeing some old art friends and meeting some online friends for the first time. I am going for broke at this retreat and will be involved in the following activities:

For the opening night kick-off on July 29, I will be hosting an artist panel. This is your chance to get up close and personal with artists Pam Carriker, Leighanna Light, Thomas Ashman, Jen Cushman, Dina Wakley, Crystal Neubauer, Joanna Pierotti, and Don Madden. I will be leading a conversation and fielding questions from the audience. Following the panel, you will have a chance to mingle one-to-one with the entire set of retreat instructors and see their class sample face-to-face.

I will be teaching the following three workshops...

For Your Eyes Only - Tuesday July 30, 9:00-4:30
A new workshop being held for the first time anywhere

Mixed Media Dossier - Wednesday July 31, 9:00-4:30
Make a one-of-a-kind personal dossier

Text Tiles - Thursday August 1, 6:00-9:00
Textured backgrounds and text-filled foregrounds

Finally, I will be a part of the Shopping Extravaganza, along with over 55 other vendors.

This is gonna be big! And you do not have to be part of the retreat to attend. It is being held on Saturday August 3 from 10:00-4:00 at the host hotel, the Embassy Suites in Phoenix.

I hope I get to see you. This is likely to be my one and only teaching stop in Phoenix for some time to come.

Save the Dates: Part 2

In just a matter of weeks, The Pulse of Mixed Media will be available to purchase in book stores and online. The pages of this book are made up of the art and words of more than 130 artists from our community, all of whom share their innermost secrets and passions. Think of this as an intimate discussion with all your favorite artists - a one-on-one show and tell.

To celebrate, I will be holding a series of online events starting this month. These events have been set up to mirror the content of the book. Each and every one will offer you an opportunity to experience the inner workings of these talented artists as a true art insider. Mark your calendars, save the dates, and get ready to take The Pulse of Mixed Media...

February 16: Podcast with Rice Freeman-Zachery posted now on her blog Notes from the Voodoo Lounge and on Create Mixed Media. Hear a preview of the contents of the book including responses to several survey questions, a review of the live and online promotional events to be held, our thoughts about the mixed media community, the theme of my next series on Create Mixed Media, my plans for the upcoming year, and much more.

March 1 - March 31: 31 Artists/31 Days. Meet the contributors. On every day in March, 1 of the 31 spotlight artists from the book will be highlighted on my blog. Read their "quirky" artist statements written specifically for the book, see some of my favorite artwork from each, and read my personal thoughts about them all. Then head over to their sites to read about their experience of being in the book. And get ready to be eligible for a very special giveaway by simply leaving a comment.

March 21: Twitter Launch Party. Log into Twitter between 9-10pm EST to have a real time talk with myself and many of the contributors in the book. More details about this event will be posted on my blog as the date approaches.

March 28: Podcast with Mark Lipinski on Creative Mojo. I will be Mark's co-host for the entire 2 hour podcast which airs live from 3-5pm EST (and which will be archived for listening anytime). We will talk all about The Pulse of Mixed Media and be joined by contributors Michelle Ward, Angela Cartwright, Pam Carriker, Julie Prichard, and Lisa Hoffman. Get your questions ready as this radio show has a live call-in feature!

March 31: Live artist panel at The Ink Pad in NYC. I will be joined by contributors Leslie Marsh, Karen Cole, Jill Zaheer, Julie Prichard, Roxanne Evans Stout, and Michelle Ward. So why am I talking about a live event in this list of online events? Because the panel will be video taped and available for viewing on Create Mixed Media sometime in early April.

April 2 - April 12: Blog tour. Visit 11 blogs on 11 consecutive days for a traditional blog tour with book reviews, interviews, and more. Hear how each of these bloggers answer their choice of 3 of the questions posed to the contributors of the book. And again, get ready to be eligible for a very special giveaway by simply leaving a comment.

April 6: New podcast with Rice Freeman-Zachery posted now on her blog Notes from the Voodoo Lounge and on Create Mixed Media where we catch up on all the live events for my book release from last week, talk about the events coming up, discuss just what exactly a Twitter party is, and talk about our plans to start and co-host a call-in radio show.

There will also be frequent updates on my Facebook page and on Twitter as I travel on my book tour throughout the United States and Canada. AND read this for information about your opportunity to answer the very same questions posed to the artists in the book for an online project I am hosting in conjunction with the release of the book.

Mixed Media Dossier

Join me in New York City on March 31st when The Ink Pad in NYC will be holding a series of special events to celebrate the release of my book The Pulse of Mixed Media: Secrets and Passions of 100 Artists Revealed.

WORKSHOP

From 1pm to 5pm, I will be teaching a workshop called Mixed Media Dossier. In this workshop you will create a personal dossier - a handmade, mixed media journal that you can use long after the workshop ends. Use it as a daily journal or as a place to record a specific event or experience.

During the workshop you will learn a variety of mixed media techniques for creating texture, layers and dimension that you can apply to any future project.

A simple approach to binding will allow you to literally pull the entire project together and to add pages to your dossier at anytime in the future.

In the end, you will have a one-of-a-kind and highly personal keepsake.

Seats for the workshop are limited and must be reserved in advance. Click here to find out more information about the class and contact the Ink Pad at 212-463-9876 to register. Please note that the supplies for the class have been updated and the final list can be obtained when you call to register for the workshop.

Workshop has sold out. Thank you!

ARTIST PANEL

Prior to the workshop on March 31st, from 10am to 12pm,  I will be moderating an artist panel with contributing artists Michelle Ward, Karen Cole, Jill Zaheer, Roxanne Evans Stout, Julie Prichard, and Danny Gregory.

The panel members will discuss their contributions to the book, answer audience questions, show samples of their artwork, share their personal creative process, and sign copies of the book.

The panel is free and open to the public but you must contact The Ink Pad at 212-463-9876 in advance to reserve a place as seats are limited. This will be an opportunity to have a true insider's view and is an event not to be missed.

Visions

Every so often, an art book is released that speaks to me from cover to cover. You know the one that you constantly go back to for information and inspiration. I really only have a few on this list and one of them without doubt is Book + Art: Handcrafting Artist's Books by Dorothy Simpson Krause.
Book + Art: Handcrafting Artists' Books

This book was released in 2009 but I am posting about it today because I recently saw her current solo exhibition, Visions, at 571 Projects in NYC. Running through April 16, Visions showcases a series of new, mixed media works that have been inspired by an 18th century poem. The pieces in the show are framed and wall-hung, but an artist book based on the exhibition is in the process of being created. Dorothy Simpson Krause generously took the time to write the following to the readers of The Altered Page:

"I'm currently completing a book, Visions to accompany the exhibition at 571 Projects of images related to Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem Kubla Khan or, A Vision in a Dream, A Fragment, composed in 1797 after an opium influenced dream. Coleridge's vision is of a savage place, with holy and enchanted caverns, walls, towers and a sacred river where "The shadow of the dome of pleasure floated midway on the waves". These haunting images of submerged architectural passageways, lit from within, reflect the branches of trees and illuminate floating leaves and flowers."

"Producing a body of work for an exhibit and making a book are similar in that they use images that have a relationship and work well together. While wall-hung pieces may be variable in size, shape and material and any number can be hung in any order, books are usually designed to be hand-held and bound so the images and text are sequential. In this case the wall hanging pieces, are much larger and use varied materials including fresco and aluminum. The book pages, incorporating text from Coleridge's poem, reformats and extends the images to produce pages that are 8.5" x 5.5". The paper, printing, binding and cover are yet to be decided but will be in keeping with the spirit of the work."

Head over to NearSay to read my review of and hear more details about of Visions. If you are in NYC, you can see Visions through April 16. Dorothy Simpson Krause will be at the gallery for the final day of the exhibition and will reveal her artist book at that time.

Journal Joint

I am excited to announce that I will be part of a panel discussion called "The Importance of Journaling in Fostering Creativity." This event is being hosted by the wonderful Rice Freeman Zachery and will also include Wendy Hale Davis as part of the panel. A question and answer session will follow the discussion. The day will be highlighted by a book signing during which Rice will be available to sign copies of her newest book "Creative Time & Space: Making Room for Making Art."

Creative Time and Space: Making Room for Making Art

This event is being sponsored by The Ink Pad and will take place on Saturday June 19th between 1:00 and 4:00. It is being held at the Westbeth Community Center in New York City on 55 Bethune Street (between Washington and West).

I hope everybody in and near NYC will try to attend. I would love to personally meet more of the people who visit and support The Altered Page. The event is free but seats are limited and you must register with The Ink Pad in advance for a space. You can call 212-463-9876 for reservations.
