Bits and Pieces

The new issue of Pasticcio Quartz is now available. Sarah Fishburn and Angela Cartwright are the brains behind this QUality ART Zine.

This is one of my favorite publications out there. Every issue of Pasticcio Quartz delivers so much and the 60-page, issue #15 is no exception.  In addition to pages and pages of art, there are also interviews, book reviews, movie quips, tutorials, links to discover, stories, historical artist reviews, and so much more.

I so appreciate the wonderful review that Sarah and Angela wrote about my book The Mixed-Media Artist and the fact that they included a piece of my art entitled Seek the Stars.

Australia here I come. Registration is now open for Art is You Australian Mixed Media Road Show. 

I will be joining four other US artists (Kecia Deveney, Andrea Matus DeMeng, Michael DeMeng and Sue Pellitier, as well as a group of local Aussie artists, in August 2014 in three different locations down under: New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. This all inclusive retreat will include workshops and many special events. I am gobsmacked to be part of this adventure and hope to see some of you there!

Hot off the presses from the people at Cloth Paper Scissors is a new downloadable eMag called Art Lessons: 2013 Collage & Paint Series Collector's Edition. 

This publication is a compilation of 14 Art Lessons (one from each month of 2013 and 2 new bonus lessons) from artists such as Julie Fei-Fan Balzer, Downa Downey, Jane Davenport, Carolyn Dube, Karen Michel, and many others. I am so happy to be part of this group and my Dimensional Stenciling Art Lesson is included as well.

Congratulations to artist Lesley Riley. Her recently released, self published book Quotes Illustrated has been picked up by North Light Books and will be reissued with additional content.

I have been planning a "project" for quite some time and have been busy behind the scenes working on making it happen. Thrilled that it is now complete and will be revealed just after the new year. My first resolution checked off. See you for the reveal.

This Quartz is a Gem

Issue number 14 of PASTICCIO QUARTZ has arrived. Sarah Fishburn and Angela Cartwright are the writers, artists, and masterminds behind this QUality ART Zine. This is definitely one of my most favorite publications out there and I have all 14 issues. Pasticcio is like a professionally published book. While it is filled with art and stories about art and artists, one of the things I love the most is the variety of themes and topics it covers. 

On these 60 pages you will find movie quips, word play, bookplate samples, artist Q & A, an art history lesson, book reviews, recommended links, a travelogue, multiple articles, and features from and about several different artists. And of course there is the Palais d'Art section, which highlights the artwork of more than 20 artists -- all of whom have not appeared in Pasticcio before.

I have to send out a thank you to Sarah and Angela for including in this issue the transcript of a conversation I had with the one and only Lisa Hoffman. In He Said, She Said we talk about our vulnerabilities as artists, the importance of art being accessible to all, the joy of painting, using up our art supplies, and more.

And I have to send out another, extra-special thank you to Sarah and Angela for including a review of my book, The Pulse of Mixed Media, and both of my workshop DVDs, Easy Mixed Media Surface Techniques and Easy Mixed Media Techniques for the Art Journal.

Just one small quote from the review (insert shameless plug here): "Unlike the book, which is filled with plenty of art and the musings of artists on their processes, the two DVDs are packed with the techniques used by the author himself in the construction of his fantastically layered, generally abstract, art. An Even Dozen

Issue number 12 of PASTICCIO QUARTZ has arrived. Sarah Fishburn and Angela Cartwright are the writers, artists, and masterminds behind this QUality ART Zine. I have always said that this publication is more than a zine and the current issue is no exception. Between the covers you will find 60-pages packed with artistic inspiration.

This issue features an interview with artist Amanda Marie Ploegsma, an article featuring ceramic artist Laurie Beth Zuckerman, and a workshop project by Suzi Blu. There are book recommendations and reviews, website recommendations, apps for artists, quotes, wordplay, recipes, and of course the Palais d'Art section which highlights the original artwork of more than 15 artists. And there seems to be endless tidbits of cool information sprinkled throughout, including info about eco-friendly products, chalkboard paint, Japanese cloth wrapping, and so much more.

And a big thank you is due to Sarah and Angela for also including a feature about Winds of Change, a collaborative project and self-published book that I completed with Roxanne Evans Stout from River Garden Studio.

The Zine Scene

Alicia Caudle from Altered Bits has just unveiled her first print zine. Called Altered Bits Mixed Media Art Zine, it is now available for purchase on Lulu, both as a book and (if you cannot wait) a digital download. You can also get it through Amazon. With 46 pages packed with mixed media art from 21 artists, this is sure to be a great addition to your art library. If you have seen Alicia's previous eZines, available here free of charge, then you know just how unique and special this book is.

I am happy to say that one of my artworks is included in her zine. Thanks so much Alicia!!

To the 10th Power

The newest and 10th issue of Pasticcio Quartz is hot off the presses. Created by Sarah Fishburn and Angela Cartwright, this publication is really more book than zine. I guess that is why the title includes the word Quartz, which stands for Quality Art Zine.

Sarah and Angela pour their hearts and talents into every issue. One of the many things that makes Pasticcio so special is the wide variety of topics covered. Of course there is art, and at 72 pages there is a lot of art to love. But there are also interviews, book and movie reviews, tutorials, links to discover, stories, historical artist reviews, and so much more.

Sarah and Angela invited me to be part of this issue and I am happy to say that you can find my art and an interview featured in the Art Array section. The art images shown in this post are two of my pieces that you will find in issue 10.

The last three pieces in my Melt series will be retired from my Etsy shop within the next few weeks.

Heavens to Etsy

I want to thank every one who has visited my Etsy shop. How cool is it that we now have an infinite number of art stores that are open to us 24/7/365!

Think of this post as a flyer, slipped under your door. Or the photocopy that has been stapled to the ultility pole on Main Street. Or an insert in your Sunday papers.

I have just restocked copies of my zine based on the third edition of The Pulse, originally completed in 2008. This will be the last printing that I will sell online. You can read all about the contents here. I will add additional copies to the Etsy listing as they sell. There are only 11 copies left for purchase.

I am running very low on these brass Xs, my first set of Etsy Elements. These are sold in sets of five and I have only 1 more set of hand verdigris Xs and 2 sets in your choice of their natural brass state or with a hand distressed, darkened finish. I am going to try to hunt more down, but as of now these 3 sets are the last available.

Four pieces from my Melt series remain. These are all original, mixed media artworks made using coffee grounds and combining a deep chocolate brown with a rich, dark blue. And hand distressed of course.

Inspire is the newest addition to my Etsy shop. Completed on watercolor paper, this green, black and white piece measures 4" x 2 3/8". Text, numbers, and symbols float above and below the surface. And bits of metallic acrylic provide a subtle sheen.

In Disguise

Alicia from Altered Bits is at it again. She just published her third eZine, this time with the theme of Black & White. My piece in the zine, entitled "In Disguise", is one of my contributions to the ongoing collaborative project I am involved in with Viv and Steph. I recently posted about this collaboration, which we call Self Contained, in this post. And it seemed from the comments that many of you were curious about the details of this project. We are keeping the specifics under wraps for now.

But I can tell you that each of us created very distinct structures and that we are all working on every inch of the projects, including on top of anybody else's work. A true collaborative effort. So while "In Disguise" is 100% my own work, when I see it next...it may be completely different. This has certainly been an exciting, challenging, and invigorating project! Stay tuned for more!

Lucky Number Seven

Pasticcio Quartz Issue 7 is now on sale. This Quality Art Zine is the creation of the always amazing Sarah Fishburn and equally amazing Angela Cartwright. With every issue they continue to publish one of the most varied and jam-packed zines out there. If you have ever seen an issue, you will know what I mean when I say that Pasticcio is about so much more than art. And if you haven't seen an issue yet, what are you waiting for?


Issue 7 highlights graffiti, illustration, and stencil artists. I am happy to say that it includes my artwork in the Palais du Art section. And the issue also includes an original article that I wrote based on the following 1908 postcard that I was lucky enough to find quite a few years ago.

Now we are Two

We interrupt this blogging break for a special announcement: two years ago today The Altered Page was born. For me, birthdays are always cause to reminisce and my thoughts have led me back to my first post. At that time I wrote:

"I have 3 goals in mind for this blog. First, to share my art and receive feedback in return. Second, to share artists, websites, stores, books, ideas, and creations that I have found. And third, to share great art finds from the museums, galleries, and streets of New York."

These goals continue to provide direction for my blog. However, I would add that The Altered Page has become the vehicle for so much more than I could have ever even imagined. It has been the catalyst for and force behind my ongoing artwork. It has led me to develop connections with all of YOU - creative, generous, energetic, and loyal art bloggers and blog readers. And it is the fuel feeding my creative soul.

Combo Platter

Weeks of rain in NYC. Following a thunder clapping, sky blackening, torrential downpour last night, the sky turned golden and then hot pink. Pictured above is an unretouched shot of the beautiful moment.

I was lucky enough to have recently met Sarah Fishburn. Sarah and some of her family are on a whirlwind road trip all over the United States. We spent an afternoon together wandering around NYC. Turns out Sarah is as warm, friendly, and humorous as she is talented, creative, and generous. And what a great family too! Sarah wanted me to send a shout out to everybody and let you know that she will be home and back to blogging very soon!
