From the Treetops

Since last August, Julie from The Land of Lost Luggage and JeriAnn from Commuter's Journal have co-hosted an ongoing, online collaboration called Getting Arboreal: A Nature Collection. The idea was to chose a tree to follow over time and through the seasons. I chose a whole grove of trees in Central Park - just a few of the more than 4 million trees in the Park. The location is by Bethesda Terrace, one of my favorite spots in the Park.

My trees in late August 2009 from the original post...

Here they are in early November 2009 as posted here...

And some new pictures, during one of the many snow days in NYC this past winter...

Completing the four seasons, here are pictures from today...

And not wanting to make the other trees jealous (this one you will want to enlarge!)...

You can follow the links to all the participants by clicking through the list on the sidebar of Julie's blog.

What a gorgeous area to select for your arboreal journey and how amazingly different the scene looks across the seasons. You can get a totally different feel from the change in the varying color palettes. Hey, did you know that there is a group of pigeons that hang out there throughout all of the seasons? I can see the same ones in each picture! LOL Hope you're cracking up! Haven't been to this spot in over 20 years- but these pictures have definitely inspired me to visit very soon!

Cherry Blossoms?
Coming from the D.C. area, I'm bursting with homesickness.
I remember skipping school on Earth Day to scoop up the blossoms from the street, twirling and singing like a good hippie-chick.
A GROVE was a brilliant choice.

Wow, this is absolutely amazing Seth. It's so exciting to follow. It filled my lungs with fresh air, a great feeling of intense life connecting with the natural world. I did enlarge that one, it was very worth it.....just stunning. Here in Southern California, we don't feel the seasons changing so much but I have a gorgeous cherry like tree seen from my living room/balcony. I follow it every year and notice it's grandness season after season. Thank you for that. Beautifully captured.

Nice Seth- I hadn't realised your earlier shots were part of the collab. I love observing the seasons when I go for teh same walk every other day. I love Autumn the best but Winter is pretty rad too...I love the bare branches and the shapes the make when silhouetted against the morning sky.

This is one of my favorite places also. I photograph angel statues wherever people direct me but the backdrop for this angel is beautiful year round.

Oh wow, oh wow. Since I only have one uninspiring tree, I didn't think to join the fun. But I now realize I could have used someone else's tree to display. What a super collaboration and wonderful photos. That last one is a killer. Does the pink tree in the background have cherry blossoms?

OOOOOOOooh, look at those beautiful trees in bloom. Only the willows here are showing some yellow green.
Of course, the snow this morning didn't help anything along. :)Bea

Great series. I'm a native New Yorker now living in Minnesota and whenever I go back it's a must to make time for Central Park and I always take photos of the fountain. Your juxtaposition of seasons is wonderful!

They are so beautiful. I loved your tree the first time I saw her and she has not let me down walking thru the seasons. Thank you.
