StudioScapes: Chapter 8

Welcome to the fourth edition of The Pulse -- The State of the Art -- a survey in words and pictures of the online artist community. Nearly 150 artists have answered a list of questions which make up The Pulse. Their responses will be presented as a series of online and print projects. Links to the first two projects, Secret Sunday and The Book Guild, can be found on the sidebar of my blog.

StudioScapes is the third project and Chapter 8 starts right now! All artists participating in The Pulse were asked to submit a photograph of a favorite art-related vignette from their home or studio.

Little inspirations: little bits I've captured over the years that I rotate around to inspire me; plus where I keep some of my important things I might use at any time!

An impromptu show of "Dots" collages from the flat files.

A photo of my studio (I cleaned it up LOL).

My most favorite place to be...working, or planning, or just referencing a source book.

I have a studio in my garage and an easel for larger paintings, but a surprising amount of my art is made at my little corner table. This is where I create the covers and sew my blank books, and make my art journal pages, and do all the small stuff that I enjoy most.

It's Elemental, my dear Watson

Over the last few months,  I have completed a new series of mixed media originals. Called Elemental, this collection brings me back to the basics: starkly simple, spare, fundamental.

Texture: rough and distressed. What lies underneath.

Color: pale blues, greys, and whites. Sky and sea.

Shape: lines, circles, and crosses. My favorites.

Image: photographic elements. Abstract fields.

Detail: metal and rubber. Found and unfound.

Each piece of the series is one-of-a-kind and has been created on cold press watercolor paper, handmade in Montreal at the Papeterie Saint Armand. The background is highly textured and layered with hand-mixed, acrylic paint and every color field in the series is a unique shade. Making use of the horizon line as an anchor, the artwork also includes original photographic images as well as metal and/or rubber elements. Each piece measures approximately It 10" x 7 1/2".

Audience Participation

Back home from my travels...

...and back to business.

I will be posting about my adventure over the next few weeks. In the mean time...

Four new survey questions have been posted on my sidebar.

There are more questions to come but I wanted to ask for your input. I would love to be able to find out what YOU are interested in knowing. If there are any questions that you would like to see asked or if there are any issues that you would like to know how we all feel about, please email me. I just might be able to add them to the survey.

My easel area, in the mess that I left it last night. The 3 paintings on the easel are waiting to be signed; I keep changing the arrangement of toy blocks, looking for the right way to paint them.
