It's Elemental, my dear Watson

Over the last few months,  I have completed a new series of mixed media originals. Called Elemental, this collection brings me back to the basics: starkly simple, spare, fundamental.

Texture: rough and distressed. What lies underneath.

Color: pale blues, greys, and whites. Sky and sea.

Shape: lines, circles, and crosses. My favorites.

Image: photographic elements. Abstract fields.

Detail: metal and rubber. Found and unfound.

Each piece of the series is one-of-a-kind and has been created on cold press watercolor paper, handmade in Montreal at the Papeterie Saint Armand. The background is highly textured and layered with hand-mixed, acrylic paint and every color field in the series is a unique shade. Making use of the horizon line as an anchor, the artwork also includes original photographic images as well as metal and/or rubber elements. Each piece measures approximately It 10" x 7 1/2".

Photography: Mexico - text

The graphics and text used on the building advertisements all over Mexico were very distinct: bold, bright, colorful, and often peeling! As much of my artwork uses text as a secondary component, I derived so much inspiration from these signs. Photos of a few of my favorites are below.

Back to the blog! My recent trip to Mexico was filled with endless amounts of visual inspiration. Among my favorite aspects of art in general are layers, textures, patina and aged materials. Needless to say, Mexico is filled with examples of all of these things...altered by nature. Over the next few weeks I will be posting photographs from this trip, all of which highlight different aspects of the beauty of Mexico and it's culture...and all of which will find their way into my art! In New York: texture

The streets of New York City are filled with stunning visuals. I never leave home without a camera because you never know what you might find. I love texture of all kinds and love to incorporate it in my artwork. Sometimes I create my own texture and sometimes it is "borrowed."
