Special Choice
Tri-Fold: New Perspectives on Book Arts at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center in Brooklyn just closed on Saturday. Three different curators had selected pieces related to book arts for that show, including my Handbook. The show was very well attended and I was happy to hear that Yuko Nii, the curator who had chosen my piece, had decided to extend her portion of the exhibition with new selections added as well.
Special Choice: Book Arts Part 1 & 2 will run at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center from December 4, 2010 to January 9, 2011. If you are in NYC during the run of the show I hope you will stop by and visit.

StudioScapes: Chapter 12
Welcome to the fourth edition of The Pulse -- The State of the Art -- a survey in words and pictures of the online artist community. Nearly 150 artists have answered a list of questions which make up The Pulse. Their responses will be presented as a series of online and print projects. Links to the first two projects, Secret Sunday and The Book Guild, can be found on the sidebar of my blog.
StudioScapes is the third project and Chapter 12 starts right now! All artists participating in The Pulse were asked to submit a photograph of a favorite art-related vignette from their home or studio.

My studio is in The Liberties area in Dublin City. It's a drafty Old Victorian building that has twenty resident artists there at present This is a shot of a work 'When Your Talking Machine Glides' hanging on the beautiful iron arched window in my studio (studio 11) there.

This is my $20.00 easel, and my plastic art storage stand that holds my pastels. I live in a very small house and do not have a studio space, so when I want to draw, I just pull up a chair to my easel and work. When I am not using it, it is flush with the wall.

My stand up light table. I bought it from my former employer at the Casper Star Tribune back in the day when we did paste up by hand. It has been modified to the correct height and I use it with a tractor seat type chair that you lean into and not stand at.

Thanks for spending the last 12 Sundays with The Altered Page, visiting the studios of these wonderful artists. Today marks the last posting of this series. But swing by next Sunday, as the next project fromThe Pulse begins. And remember that you can always find the links to the first three projects (Secret Sunday, The Book Guild, StudioScapes) on the sidebar of this blog.

One of a Kind
The One of a Kind Show and Sale hit NYC for the last two weekends. Over 100 artisans showcased their handmade goods, including art, crafts, clothing, and jewelry. There was a lot to love there but the work of 4 artists in partcular stood out to me.
Hands down my favorite find at the show was the work of found object artist John Borrero. If that name sounds familiar, it might be because you have seen him showcased in Susan Tuttle's wonderful book Exhibition 36. John creates stunning and powerful artworks, each of which has a mystery all its own and story to tell. His paintings and sculptures speak for themselves...
I was amazed by the technical expertise of the metalwork of Chris Beck. Although he creates many objects out of metal, at this show he highlighted his line of clothes, made out of scavenged tin. The level of realistic detail he achieves is incredible. Chris is from a small town in Georgia and he shared with me that it is not unusual for him to wake up and find a heap of scrap metal left on his lawn by anonymous locals.
Two of the abstract paintings of Armando Pedroso were calling my name throughout the entire show. And a later visit to his website had his art, particularly his Grafitti series, yelling at me louder.
I really enjoyed the whimsy of Denise Fiedler's collages made from vintage book pages. Denise aptly presents her artwork under the name Paste. Her wall of framed pieces was at at the entrance to the show and really made a big impact.
Have your say! Four new survey questions have just been posted on the sidebar of my blog. These will be the final questions in the series, with the results presented as part of my upcoming book. Stop by and share your opinions.

The Daily News
Thanks to everybody who signed up for a chance to win The Winds of Change, the book that Roxanne and I self-published. Your comments were all so positive and affirming.
A thank you also goes out to Patti Edmon from Altered Attic who reviewed the book in this post.
I wish I could give a copy to everybody! But today the lucky winner is ...Gillian McMurray. Congrats Gillian. I hope you love the book.
The book can be previewed and purchased here. It would make a great holiday present for any art lover, including yourself!
If you haven't added your answers to this week's survey questions on my sidebar, head on over and speak your mind. The questions will be up until late Wednesday, at which time four new questions will be posted.

Submissions for my book The Artist's Pulse (working title) have been streaming in. The responses to the questions have been wonderfully authentic and the art images I have received are stunning. The open call continues and all the details can be found here. A reminder to all that the deadline for Q & A responses is November 30, a week from tomorrow. The deadline for the artwork is December 31. If you reading this and debating whether to send something in...consider this a sign that you should!

I have taken a shot of my 'lazy susan' which holds paints, gesso, glues and inks! It makes grabbing what I need so much easier!

The first photo is of an ordinary day at my work table in its usual disarray with a few collections added for the photo. The black & white piece of art at the back of the table is an original work done personally for me by Ketut Lyer, the Balinese artist in "Eat, Pray Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert. It is a drawing of Saraswati, the goddess of art, music and literature and below her (which you can't see in this photo) is ancient scripture and prayers. She is my muse when I am working.
_______________
The image I sent is of a small collection of Paris collages. They are image transfers of the Eiffel Tower (from a photo I took) transferred to collages comprised of tissue paper, pigment and dyed silk organza.

My favourite late-night activity while I wind down and watch TV... breaking out the art journal.

I don't have an actual dedicated studio space that I use. I have a desk and shelving/drawers for storage in the garage, next to the washing machine and kids bikes (not very inspiring!) and this area here which is in the family lounge. This space serves a practical place to keep things I use often as well as a 'inspiration station' filled with received art, bits of my art and cards from my kids. There's a few nests here too of course!
