31/31: Judy Wise

31 artists...31 days. Spend every day of March with me at The Altered Page to meet the 31 spotlight artists in my book The Pulse of Mixed Media: Secrets and Passions of 100 Artists Revealed. See their beautiful faces, read their 'quirky' bios written in their own words, see some of their art that led me to invite them to be a part of my book, and hear my story of what they each mean to me. Then click on over to their sites and see what they have to say about The Pulse of Mixed Media.
------------------------------------

There is a thread through all my work. A search and a love of the search. Without the passion for the search and a love of the materials (wax, paint, paper, clay, nature) - life has no meaning.

I am looking for my stubborn idea of beauty and often enough I find it.

That is enough for a lifetime of devotion.

------------------------------------
When I first came upon Judy Wise's blog many years ago, I was completely mesmerized by her journal pages. Uniquely hers, they were bursting with color, drawings, text, collage, photographs, stamps, and a ton of passion. So many people journal and so many post their pages. But Judy's stand out to me as quite special and truly all her own. She still posts her pages and I still love them as much.

But Judy's blog and her art are about much more than just her journal pages. I am utterly enthralled with her abstract plaster and encaustic paintings. And I am so lucky to have one in my studio. Her book Plaster Studio: Mixed-Media Techniques for Painting, Casting and Carving, written with Stephanie Lee, has inspired me greatly. I have never met Judy but from what I can tell she is one very special person. Looking forward Judy to the days our paths cross.

Judy shows such a love of Mexico in her work. As I have lived in Spain for the last 23years I can see were she is coming from. The pueblos are so similar. Her work is so full of colour & excitement. It's just great...

I love Judy Wise! I took her online plaster class with, another favorite of mine, Stephanie Lee. Although I have never met Judy, I keep "in touch" through her blog. Such an inspiring woman.

I have been painting with Venetian
plaster for 10 years, I had no idea others were using plaster or that there was a book about it, this is exciting, and clearly I need to get out more :-).

There is an archeological feeling to Judy Wise' plaster and encaustic paintings, here. I look down through the layers she presents us with in her work, and I feel the passage of time. Her love for the materials she uses is evident in every detail. I am particularly struck by her statement: "I am looking for my stubborn idea of beauty. . .", which resonates so much with me because it seems as though this is, truly, what it's all about; what any of us, as artists, are trying to do! Thank you, Seth, for connecting us to such beauty and wisdom!

I was first intrigued with Judy's work when I found Plaster Studio. I really like what she does when she is creating her paintings and plaster art. I don't journal, so that has never interested me, but her other work really makes me happy.

Dear Seth;

LOOK at these wonderful works! Thank you for featuring Judy Wise today.

I came by here at 1330 eastern time last night to find out who the Equinox Artist was. How fitting that Spring springs forth with Judy at the helm!

Judy knows that I am stalking her, but she's just too nice about it. I told her that I was printing out her journal pages (generously pictured in hi-res on her wonderful blog), collaging them to my journal pages, and passing them off as my own, and she simply gave me a coy tilt of the head and a smile (virtually, of course).

Apparently, she's constitutionally unable to be mean.

I've read all her entries in the Pulse book, and they are, of course, brilliant. I've thought about whiting out her name at the bottom of all her quotes and collaging my name there. Who would know?

She's a mystery, while being completely open and down to earth.

When I get to artfest, I'll key my initials into her car. It's the least I can do. Plus, it's artistic!

Respectfully,

Chris
