What can I say about Lynne Perrella? She is an artist and an instructor. She is an author and a columnist. She is an illustrator and a designer. But most of all she is a trailblazer. She was the force behind True Colors
, which changed the face of mixed media art as we know it. She is creative, kind, generous, and innovative and has been a source of inspiration to me long before I began blogging. And she has been a consistent supporter of me in my career as an artist.
I have met Lynne twice, having had the luck of taking two different workshops with her in 2007 and 2009. She is a wonderful instructor, who found the good in every student and in each piece of art that was created. But I have to say that the highlight of the workshops was seeing her own art in person. As sensational and spectacular as it is online, it is even better "live." For the second workshop, Lynne brought in her white journal from True Colors. Seeing that in person at that time in my development as an artist was priceless. Thanks for that Lynne!
Lynne also has a beautiful way with words. I have read many of her articles and have always been enthralled by her descriptive language. We are all in luck today because today Lynne has reviewed a recent exhibition she has seen on Art Propelled, Robyn Gordon's website. AND there is a giveaway. Looking at Lynne's work I just know she "maintains the same excitement and uncluttered instincts about making art" that she felt in childhood. It must be a liberating experience to take part in her workshops.
These are beautiful! I especially like the one with numbers and tags. This reminds me so much of Jasper Johns' work. I teach an art class for young children and love to do mixed media with them. We do a Jasper Johns-type project similar to this. Thanks for posting. It looks like a great book that will spur some inspiration for many people!
I am a huge fan of LynnePerella as well. I think I have all her books. My copy of True Colors is worn out from all the love. To say she influenced my path as an artist is an understatement. I am now a dedicated art journaler and I enjoy it soooo much. It is my chosen art form.
I took a workshop with her and was so inspired.

Lynne is certainly an icon in the world of mixed media art. When you spend time with her, her "true colors" show so beautifully,in her ability to share her enthusiasm for her craft. There are as many complex layers to her as a person, as there are in her work. I feel privileged to share pages in your book with her and to know her.

I love Lynne's use of color and the depth of contemplation required to really fully understand the message in each piece.
True Colors was my introduction to the art journaling, mixed media world. I've never been lucky enough to take one of her classes but have every book of hers and enjoy her articles in Somerset. What an inspiring person-can't buy a set of letter stencils without thinking of her!

i would imagine lynn's workshops to be so much fun! i love the pieces of her that you've shared here, especially the first one -- all of her work is just wonderful and i have most of her books for that very reason.

Oh, really. How can anyone say enough about Lynne Perrella? Her art journals book was the very first mixed media book I ever read. I fell over and had to be resuscitated. They locked the book up and wouldn't let me see it again, but I had dreams and colorful visions came to me in the night. One of them said, Chris... the key to the cabinet is here...
So I got the book back out, and it changed my life.
For one thing, I don't sleep as soundly any more.

I am familiar with Lynne Perrella's striking artwork through her earlier appearances on "The Altered Page," and in the wonderful book "Masters: Collage, curated by Randel Plowman (of "A- Collage-A-Day" fame), which features a number of pieces from her "Icon" series. From the biographical information you include here, Seth, it certainly sounds like she is a great many things to a great many people in the mixed media arts community: a true innovator in the field who shares her discoveries, and insights with others! How incredibly cool is that!
And. . .would that we all, in our own ways, find the means as artists to tap into "the open unguarded moments of childhood." I think that just about says it all!
Lynne is an inspiration person with great enthusiasm for her art. I love her white work especially. Lynne's outlook about making art from am uncluttered instinct is admirable!
I have enjoyed looking at Lynn's art for many years and learning little hints from it for my own. I think her work has a lot of depth, moreso each year she continues to work.

Lynne's work is so stunning. She layers on her pages, but there's a palimpsest of all the beloved art of the Western World behind each of her iconic figures, layering with love and surprising colors and techniques. She is a master.

I am fortunate enough to have taken many workshops with Lynne, and will be in a two day one in just a few days, when she will be teaching me and a bunch of my friends at our annual retreat in Key Largo! Then in May, I'll be at her two day workshop in Connecticut. No matter how many classes I take with Lynne, I always learn something new, and the way my own art has soared since first meeting her is indescribable.
Oh, and the first Lynne class I ever took is also where I met Seth for the first time!
Lynne's art and books are amazing to me as well!

I was so, so disappointed in True Colors when I first read it. I know I've shared that with you before. At the time, I was just trying to learn about collage and mixed media, and this was NOT a technique book, but a book on how people felt at the time they were creating the art that went into the book (which just happened to coincide with 9/11 in some instances). I have since come to appreciate the book for what it is, not for what I anticipated it would be. I am sure Lynn would approve of my "evolution."
Love her work. It is not what I would do, but it is beautiful.

Lynne's work is inspiring to me; I definitely feel that 'freedom to make art like a child' in her art. It's what makes art truly great, and a very hard thing to do; she lives there.

Lynne is one of my favorite mixed media artists and she's "from" Pittsburgh like me so we have that in common! She is so creative and makes such interesting artwork. So pleased that she is in your book.
