On Board
Just want to send out a big thank you to everybody who commented and/or emailed after I posted about being accepted into my first juried exhibition. I am quite excited about this and am really pleased that the exhibition is sponsored by The Book Arts Round Table and The Printmaking Council of New Jersey.
PCNJ is an organization that is involved in not only promoting and teaching the art of printmaking but is also becoming very active in using art to highlight and express social and political issues.
The first book of two that were accepted into the show is "Billboard." Some of you may remember the start of this project, which had been previously posted on my blog. Only a few pages were completed when I put the book aside. It remained unfinished until I was inspired by the theme of this exhibition, "Below the Surface."
Now completed, this book is loosely influenced by both the shape and the visuals of old, previously used billboards.
These old billboards become abstract canvases which totally resonate with my love of things with a history, things distressed, things with layers, and things that have been changed by time.
And, in the case of this exhibition, they reveal what is below the surface.
Sold. Thank you!

Seth, you did a wonderful job on the book. They pages are rich with texture, color, and story. Love the format of the book as well.
Seth Huge huge kudos and congrats for being accepted into the exhibition!
This book is AMAZING. I would absolutely savor the pages. I'm drooling over it from afar. Your work is some of my most favorite.
Extremely magnificent!
WOW!
All right, now that we have got that out of the way and I have been able to catch my breath, I just want to say that this is indeed an incredible work of art. Lets underscore the word ART.
I know I would love to close my eyes and run my hands over each single page, picking up the energies contained within the many singular pieces that are all so connected. Afterwards bath my eyes on the richness of each page.
Thank you so much for sharing.
Egmont
Wow,very inspiring!
I would love to be turning these pages. Stunning.
Definately a very urban feel to these pages. I love the aged/distressed look and all of that wonderful texture...I just want to touch it.
Wonderful work of art.
Aweeee Seth! I came here to tell you I posted some photo's of my disintegration project on my blog - and I see yet another beautiful project by you! You keep me inspired... thanks, and have a lovely weekend!
Once again I find my vocabulary inadequate for the beauty of your art. Your book is beyond belief. This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen. You deserve to have it entered in the show. If you hadn't been accepted, there would have been something wrong with the judges.
OMG seth!! you're just a genius or you're an alien ... your creative brains must be extraterrestrial ... that's the most beautiful thing that my humans eyes have ever seen!
Seth, the pages are so rich & 'juicy' with texture and colours !!
WOW! Makes me want to explore the surface and feel the structure. Great work of art!
Congratulations - you truly deserve to be selected for this exhibition!
A stunning piece that certainly deserves to be displayed. It fulfills the brief beautifully too.
My dad had to do an occasional billboard. I'm talking about the ones that were 'pasted up'. They were not large billboards, (we lived in Northern Montana for crying out loud) and as I remember it (we're talking early Fifties here) he got the new sheets in a mailing tube. He had a scraper that looked like a spade but wider which he used to scrape off as much of the old one as he could, and what I SAW! It was wonderful looking at this great piece of art, just like yours, only LARGE.
This is great art, Seth. Nowadays, they stretch mylar or plastic or whatever it is over the billboards, or they're gigantic reader boards that change all the time. I don't begrudge them ads, but I do begrudge them the art.
The book is wonderful.
Each page is a work of art. I can forget that it has been recently created and instead dream of what went on when each layer was laid down over time.
I don't quite understand this absolute LOVE of the old, the layered, the time and weathered worn look. I know some art friends that cringe when I show them old door photos, old barns, etc. They don't have that passion for it or the need to try to create it.
You have succeeded in doing that.
Well done. :)Bea
That is incredible!!
These pages would make a startling exhibit in MOMA. PCNJ is so lucky to have your work in a showing with them today- so rich in texture, color and layers of such various designs. Your pages are the quintessential "Under the Surface" entry. Very best wished in this juried exhibition. In additon to your work being selected, we are all winners just to have the opportunity to share in your artwork!
Fabulous book Seth. I love all the textures and text elements.
Spectacular work, Seth and Congratulations!!!
Seth, it's really cool and good for me to have someone's art like yours to be inspired by...I come here and am mind bloggled by what you do/make/create/if I live to be 100 will I ever have what you have?
LOL You know, its okay if I don't, if only you have IT. It's just nice to have you in the world and to visit your art this way. I guess I am becoming a Seth Groupie! LOL
WOW!!! These are a journey back in time for me - Burma Shave signs, old billboards from the New York Thruway... at the time I had NO appreciation for the old billboards barely hanging on in the fields. Now thanks to you I have some new memories of trips to upstate New York. Beautiful work, and congrats on the show!
You were working on Billboard when I discovered your blog, this is... I can't think of the superlatives to praise this book! I am totally in love with it!!
Wonderful work, use of colour and design.
Super congratulations!
I have to repeat what Egmont said...
WOW. I love the idea of the billboard concept-- the layers of textures, text, colors, history, all excite me and I will have to go and take more looks at these.
what a terrific inspiration theme
i LOVE looking at billboards
the older ones had a more arty feel than the new ones covered in plastic
and their aging patina just added to their charm
your book looks rich and textural
which is a feature trademark for your work (my opinion of course)
i am sure it is going to be well recieved
will there be awards for this program?
if so...make room for your ribbon!
Seth, this fantastic book resonates somewhere deep within... I absolutely adore every inch of it. Great job. You deserve to be in the exhibit and so much more. This is my all-time favorite!!
Your book has taken my breath away - and I'm more than a little inspired.
It's such a pity I can't get my hands on that book but I am grateful that you share such beautiful photographs of your work here.
Wow! Congratulations on the exhibit. You definitely deserve it. And thanks for all the new eye candy to look at! That should keep me satisfied for a couple of days to say the least!
Now , you're cooking with gas!
No more almost done, undercooked, thin , trying to get there stuff...this one has "content"
SETH! Now I know why it was selected.
This has to be, from what I've been able to 'gather' from mere photos, one of your most extensive works.
You're inspiring me to get the paints out and file the digital work again.
I see Egmont here - you'd enjoy a look at his work and history on billboards....if you haven't already viewed it.
wow! Seth - just fabulous - what a gorgeous book...
xox - eb.
oh Seth! eye candy to the extreme. those colors, that texture! brilliant work. such passion.

Dear Seth...I have been making memories with my grand children and dear friends for the last three days but you have made sacred pages that reveal hidden messages and meanings in your latest book pages. You have been a gracious guide to us who share the elusive path and journey in making authentic ART. Imagine and Live in Peace, Mary Helen Fernandez Stewart
These pages look so amazing in your book 'billboard'. I love the thickness and depth to the pieces within... such obvious thought and yet also joyful play shows through on each page.
The label 'billboard' on the front... rusted copper? It looks great.
BRAVO Seth!!! So well deserved being part of what sounds like a very special exhibit! Your book is so original and rich looking!
We in blogland are lucky to get to see your artwork (I always appreciate your closeup views)... now others get to as well and lucky them getting to see it in person!!!
I can only imagine your excitement .. we'll all be able to say we knew you when :)

This book is so beyond beautiful, it makes me feel faint. So awesome, Seth! The colours, the layers, the artistry....

Hi Seth,
I came across your blog when planning lessons for my Year 9 Art Group on 'the journey'. What an inspiration. I am also in the process of preparing work for an exhibition and have been battling with use of materials and typography. Your approach has really inspired me and put me on the right path ... I think !
Thanks for a wonderful blog :)
