Just want to send out a big thank you to everybody who commented and/or emailed after I posted about being accepted into my first juried exhibition. I am quite excited about this and am really pleased that the exhibition is sponsored by The Book Arts Round Table and The Printmaking Council of New Jersey.
PCNJ is an organization that is involved in not only promoting and teaching the art of printmaking but is also becoming very active in using art to highlight and express social and political issues.
The first book of two that were accepted into the show is "Billboard." Some of you may remember the start of this project, which had been previously posted on my blog. Only a few pages were completed when I put the book aside. It remained unfinished until I was inspired by the theme of this exhibition, "Below the Surface."
Now completed, this book is loosely influenced by both the shape and the visuals of old, previously used billboards.
These old billboards become abstract canvases which totally resonate with my love of things with a history, things distressed, things with layers, and things that have been changed by time.
And, in the case of this exhibition, they reveal what is below the surface.

All right, now that we have got that out of the way and I have been able to catch my breath, I just want to say that this is indeed an incredible work of art. Lets underscore the word ART.
I know I would love to close my eyes and run my hands over each single page, picking up the energies contained within the many singular pieces that are all so connected. Afterwards bath my eyes on the richness of each page.

Once again I find my vocabulary inadequate for the beauty of your art. Your book is beyond belief. This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen. You deserve to have it entered in the show. If you hadn't been accepted, there would have been something wrong with the judges.

A stunning piece that certainly deserves to be displayed. It fulfills the brief beautifully too.
My dad had to do an occasional billboard. I'm talking about the ones that were 'pasted up'. They were not large billboards, (we lived in Northern Montana for crying out loud) and as I remember it (we're talking early Fifties here) he got the new sheets in a mailing tube. He had a scraper that looked like a spade but wider which he used to scrape off as much of the old one as he could, and what I SAW! It was wonderful looking at this great piece of art, just like yours, only LARGE.
This is great art, Seth. Nowadays, they stretch mylar or plastic or whatever it is over the billboards, or they're gigantic reader boards that change all the time. I don't begrudge them ads, but I do begrudge them the art.
The book is wonderful.
Each page is a work of art. I can forget that it has been recently created and instead dream of what went on when each layer was laid down over time.
I don't quite understand this absolute LOVE of the old, the layered, the time and weathered worn look. I know some art friends that cringe when I show them old door photos, old barns, etc. They don't have that passion for it or the need to try to create it.
You have succeeded in doing that.

These pages would make a startling exhibit in MOMA. PCNJ is so lucky to have your work in a showing with them today- so rich in texture, color and layers of such various designs. Your pages are the quintessential "Under the Surface" entry. Very best wished in this juried exhibition. WOW!!! These are a journey back in time for me - Burma Shave signs, old billboards from the New York Thruway... at the time I had NO appreciation for the old billboards barely hanging on in the fields. Now thanks to you I have some new memories of trips to upstate New York. Beautiful work, and congrats on the show!

WOW. I love the idea of the billboard concept-- the layers of textures, text, colors, history, all excite me and I will have to go and take more looks at these.

the older ones had a more arty feel than the new ones covered in plastic
and their aging patina just added to their charm
your book looks rich and textural
which is a feature trademark for your work (my opinion of course)

I am also in the process of preparing work for an exhibition and have been battling with use of materials and typography. Your approach has really inspired me and put me on the right path ...
