Gaze

Pam Carriker has included seven Artist Spotlight Projects in her new book, Art at the Speed of Life. For each of these projects, one artist created an artwork and presents step-by-step, written and pictorial instructions so that the reader can learn the specific techniques of each artist. Pam takes this one step further and includes for each of these projects a companion project that will allow the reader to use the same techniques but in less time.

My contribution to the Spotlight Projects, which you can recreate in your own style and voice using the instructions in the book, was a textural assemblage called Gaze...

Gaze was a step-out project, where I had to provide step-by-step visuals to the publisher to photograph. This means that each piece of the assemblage had to be remade up to seven times so they could photograph the steps in order. When my artwork was returned, I also received all the step-out pieces that went into making Gaze.

I have decided to use these pieces to make additional artworks which, because they used all the same materials, will become members of Gaze's family. They are currently all in progress but will be posted soon.

Great composition! Have you carved Gaze yourself? What kind of paper have you used for the background (? bark paper). I guess I should buy a copy to get all the answers.

I like the behind the scenes dish on the book! Cool technical terms... step outs, and up close photos of the actual pieces used in the book. We are so in the know now! Plus we got to see the start of a new Seth series. Too fun!

This is fantastic. Seven times to document all the steps! what a chore/fun thing. BTW, I have started a disintegration project. I'm using a book dunked in a bucket of water. Should be interesting. thanks for encouraging all of us crazy artists.

Wow, what an amazing amount of work that must have been but I love that you're going to be creating other pieces of art from it. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Seth, love your Gaze!! Oh, I mean your textural assemblage called Gaze! :) I've seen it in person, and it is spectacular- even better looking than in the pictures. There are so many layers that make up the background - all beautiful in texture and colors, as are the head and all of the metal embellishments that are attached. Great piece! Can't wait to see all the "how to" steps in Pam's book! I know this is going to be a very special new series!

This is a fabulous piece, the pale browns and blues, your border of the thin wire and the carved face of the woman, so quiet in thought. It is wonderful to see what you are doing here, and I will be ordering this book for sure! roxanne

Love the piece! Did you carve the head? My husband carves a LOT while creating a piece. I have a copy of the book on its way... can't wait. Are you sure you'd want to know what people are thinking?! :)
