Step by Step

In her book Art at the Speed of Life, Pam Carriker includes informational essays that cover a wide range of current topics, all of which are informational and inspirational.

My contribution is an essay entitled 'Picture This: Adding Photographic Elements'. It explores integrating photography into art and art into photography.

One of the pieces of artwork I made to accompany the article was 'Steps', a mixed-media piece that includes an original photograph that I took in Mexico and which has been hand-altered. It is 'framed' with book board that I painted to resemble distressed wood.

Available for purchase in The Altered Page on Etsy.

Sold. Thank you!

That altered photo is so wonderful... I thought it was one of your 3 dimensional pieces! I felt I could touch the individual distressed steps. Great job on this Seth.

an altered image that becomes layered into a larger piece-- very creative.

I love the layers in this piece and how the outer border ties back in to the photograph.

Incorporating photography and art into one artwork is something that is interesting to me. It actually can be quite difficult to do well. Your artwork here shows how to merge the two mediums successfully.

I just got the idea in mind... what if I would use the steps in my house to put my paint supplies on... Ha, imagine the faces of my beloved and son... I love your art piece Seth, ánd it was good for a smile on this grey and misty morning!

Seth- what a super piece- and since i saw it in person- know that again, it's even more amazing in real life. The composition, simplicity and yet at the same time, complexity with perfect blended colors is just terrific. Your work is always such an inspiration and art that I always want to have for myself!!

I'm SO far behind reading your blog. I'm going to try to catch up today. When I first saw this, I thought it was snow covered steps that had been altered. My mind is thinking cold, not warm. Love it, regardless!

I'm with Azirca on this.

It looks to me like there is water or rain pouring down those steps. Interesting effect.

Your work is just so wonderful. Of course, you're probably becoming one of those stuck up New York artists who drinks champagne all day, especially now that you're published all over the place. But that's alright. We'll love you anyway. Oh my. I wonderful if I took too many of my pills? :O)

I really like this piece, it is a piece of art one could never get tired of looking at. As busy as it is, it is very calming and soothing. I especially like the effect of water softly cascading down the steps.
