Hannelore Baron

I recently had the opportunity to visit Leslie Feely in NYC and see the current exhibition HANNELORE BARON: COLLAGES AND BOX CONSTRUCTIONS 1969-1985.

The show runs through July 16th and you should run to see it.

I will let the images and detail shots speak for themselves...

Thank you for this introduction. I'm sorry to say that I was not familiar with this artist. Her life story is overwhelming to me and her work is so intimate and honest. The authenticity of her self-expression is very apparent. The power of her work is a direct result of her mental turmoil (PTSD?) and cannot be duplicated. You are fortunate to live in a city where seeing original works such as these are possible. I so wish that I did too.

I never knew this artist.
So beautiful and intimate.

Thanks so much Seth for letting folks know about this show. I'm the artist's son. Many of the collages in the show are works my mother hid when dealers came, her favorites (she had a hard time saying no, easier to hide them). I did the same for almost 30 years, but it made me sad that they hadn't been seen, so here they are. I finally made a website http://hannelorebaron.net/, and they'll be several of her boxes in a show at the New Museum this summer, called "The Keeper."
Thanks again,
Mark Baron

I just read Mark Baron's comment, and went to Hannelore's website, and read her moving biography.

Just an aside... It mentioned that she had an exhibition in 1969 with her friend, abstract painter, Alvin Most.
Al was a friend of mine, too. He taught art at a wonderful summer program for children for many years, and I was his assistant for 7 years, starting in 1973. We remained in contact till he died, a number of years ago.

I still remember some quotes that he had on the art room wall:
Fill a space in a beautiful way. - Georgia O'Keefe.
Adopt the pace of nature. Her secret is patience. Emerson.

I saw a Hannelore Baron exhibit in person several years ago and it had a very profound, moving emotional affect on me... I was mesmerized. Ever since then I show artists in all my workshops her 2 books I have of her work and talk about how unique, personal, moving her work is... a goal we should all have with our own work.
