31/31: Alicia Caudle

31 artists...31 days. Spend every day of March with me at The Altered Page to meet the 31 spotlight artists in my book The Pulse of Mixed Media: Secrets and Passions of 100 Artists Revealed. See their beautiful faces, read their 'quirky' bios written in their own words, see some of their art that led me to invite them to be a part of my book, and hear my story of what they each mean to me. Then click on over to their sites and see what they have to say about The Pulse of Mixed Media.
------------------------------------
I have a bit of an art-related multiple personality disorder as I'm creatively all over the board. I paint. I collage. I assemble. I sew.

I'm a 'mad eco-scientist' of sorts in that I devise natural, earth friendly recipes for dyes, stains and inks to use in my art (largely due to annoying allergies to chemicals), and I like to make light-up and mechanical art from scrap electronic bits. This is my husband's fault as he teaches me things such as which value of resistor is needed to power an LED light.

------------------------------------
I have been trying to remember when I first 'met' Alicia. It may have been back in early 2009 when she joined my Disintegration Collaboration. In any case, her art and blog have always fascinated me. She is a mixed media and assemblage artist who has a definite 'quirky' style. To quote her own blog, she has a "penchant for anatomy, bird nests, taxidermy, miscellaneous doll parts and 'creepy things'." In attempting to include many different approaches and styles to art in my book, I just knew I had to include Alicia.

I really admire Alicia, the artist and the person. Like so many of us, she does her best to balance her art/blog with her day job (talented web designer) and her family life. Not an easy feat for sure. But she always pushes herself and goes the extra mile. She has created her own, beautiful zine Altered Bits. She is involved in some amazing collaborations as both a participant and as a host. And most admirable of all, she is starting a non-profit art group for children with aspergers syndrome and autism. Not every artist is a sharer, but Alicia is generous and giving of her time, her skills, and her heart. There is a good chance that I will meet her in person at a book release event in the Northwest. I am so looking forward to that!

So glad Alicia was included in your book. We've been friends for a while now and she is the most generous, kind and loving person.

My son has Asperger's (he and Alicia's son often chat on Skype), so I think it's fabulous that she's set up an art group for ASD children.

I don't believe she ever sleeps!

Alicia Caudle seems to be quite the go-getter! Taking a look and her blog, 'Altered Bits', I see that she is busy, busy, busy! I love that as an 'eco-scientist' she gravitates towards "anatomy, birds nests, taxidermy, miscellaneous doll parts, and 'creepy things'," which seem to me exactly the kinds of things that science should be spend time working on, and discovering more about! Alicia's self portrait in 'TPofMM' is a wonderful assemblage of an amazing collection of objects that is inspired by, as she says, "all that I treasure." I also love the delightful 'bird cage' piece, and the two pieces involving textured backgrounds, shown on this post (the geisha, and the man in Victorian dress). Wonderful stuff! Her 'Tallest Handmade Book in the World Project' sounds like a hoot! Is there still time to join?

Alicia's art is awesome. Her thought for others is awesome. What a lucky gal to have a partner to help her 'hook up' to make such exciting original pieces. They are almost an installation in themselves. So fabby. *smiles* Norma

Alicia is one of those artist's who are a one in a million! She has a gazillion things going on at one time- and yet she always makes you feel as if you are the only person in the room! I am one of the luckiest artists to have my work in her art zines and she gifted me with one of her most amazing hand sewn journal books when I was sick. She has been a huge support for me and is such a talent! Her assemblages and pieces that she sells are so different than anything I've ever seen! Alicia was the one who introduced me to my first "Frozen Charlotte" ! She's a genuine Renaissance woman who seems to do it all- graciously, with such passion and with all her heart! Alicia and I are working on a collaboration that will be so amazing for the both of us! Just love this gal. Great 31/31 post Seth!

Howdy dudey - just catching up with all the excitement now. Crazy times with the four year old...fun and exciting but it has meant leaving my art behind these days (and my blog)!

I was quite delighted to have the opportunity to be a part of your book and although I didn't make it this time round, look out for next time! (and there will be a next time, I'm sure, now that you've got the publishing bug!).

I have just bought the eBook for my tablet and was absolutely stoked to see that the multi-talented Alicia has been spotlighted in it. So I headed over here to find that here she is again. Excellent choice and so pleased to read all the +ve reviews on Amazon. Well done, Seth! You deserve all the accolades that get heaped on you :-)

I just found your book on Amazon...can't wait to order it...or? Should I wait??? Maybe I will win the giveaway for your book!
I have basically been a doll artist since 2008, with the host of Cloth and Clay doll ning, Jane Des Rosier.
Jane is probably one of the most innovative doll artists and also collage artist.
