31/31: Pam Carriker

31 artists...31 days. Spend every day of March with me at The Altered Page to meet the 31 spotlight artists in my book The Pulse of Mixed Media: Secrets and Passions of 100 Artists Revealed. See their beautiful faces, read their 'quirky' bios written in their own words, see some of their art that led me to invite them to be a part of my book, and hear my story of what they each mean to me. Then click on over to their sites and see what they have to say about The Pulse of Mixed Media.
------------------------------------

It is both my personal goal, and my artistic goal, to have my life and art reflect my true self.

Some days my "true self" has paint on her elbow for more than one day at a time, and can't find the TV remote under the pile of socks that have lost their mates, but there are days when her skinny jeans fit and all is right with the world.

I strive to convey the importance of the things in my life that matter most to me through my art.

------------------------------------
I have always been inspired by the path that Pam has taken as an artist. I cannot remember how I first came to know of her or when I first visited her blog. But I do remember that as time passed, she seemed to be everywhere. All at once. She is an unstoppable force, as evident by her many published articles, her must-have book Art at the Speed of Life, her line of clear stamps, her mixed-media product line, her workshop DVD, her live and online courses, and in all the plans that are probably in the works that none of us know about yet. Oh, and did I mention she is working on her second book?

And the kicker is that she is a truly wonderful person too. I had the good fortune to spend some time with her at Art is...You last year. My only disappointment was how fast that time passed. I have always loved her artwork but until we met I had only seen it online and in print. Take it from me, as good as it looks in pictures...it is even better in person. I am already looking forward to seeing her again in October at this year's Art is...You. Pam...will you sign my book this time?

I'm drawn to art with human faces in it, and the examples you've shown of Pam's work show the development of a theme. Nice!

Seth, I love the links you provide here for us.
I have to say (since I'm commenting) that I find Pam's artwork deceptively accessible. It would appear that if one wanted to make a canvas like one of her pieces, it would be do-able. But her work is really layered and complex and: uniquely hers! I took her Strathmore workshop and found her clear, patient, and completely open. I ran out and got her book and love it. It, too, is deceptively accessible, but just as you start to go through it bit by bit for the second time, you realize there's even more there than you thought. From the podcast interview I heard, it's also clear that she has nothing to hide. I think it would be a real treat to spend time with her! I don't blame you for wanting more time.

You should do a team online workshop!

With even a brief look at Pam Carriker's website "Living Art at the Speed of Life," it is easily seen that she is a One-Woman Visual Arts Dynamo! I love how she incorporates the written word into her work in such a way that both the traditional meaning of the words, as well as the words, or writing, functioning as a visual element in the piece, are given equal importance. It looks as though, through her openness to sharing, and in helping to educate others in the visual arts community, her life and her art reflect each other in equal measure! "Living Art at the Speed of Life" will be a regular online stop of mine from now on!

You certainly know how to pick em'! I haven't had a chance to read your book but love the look of it! Kudos to you, Pulse #1 Pam and the other artists!

Now how can she say no to a request like THAT? I am incredibly impressed with her art, so I know she must be a fantastic person. Anyone who can't find the remote under a load of mismatched socks must be a truly gifted artist.

I've been enmeshed in the grey world. Black, greys, chocolate browns, shadows, ghosts, dreams...and loving every single second. And then BOOM along comes Pam with all of this color. The sun streams in and the shadows disappear. Although there is a lot of layering...and if one looks...what was that I saw moving between layers? A ghost maybe. Love Pam's style to bits. Her faces especially have a style that says 'Pam' and gosh I'd love to have my own style one day. Now I'm going to her site to drink in the delicious eye candy. *smiles* Norma

I met Pam online many years ago back in the days of an ebay art group. Finally this past year I've meet up with her a few times in person and just love being around her. She is such a loving and kind person and of course, talented. I am in awe also how she seemed to be everywhere all of a sudden. She is a brilliant business woman and knows how to keep moving forward.
