How It's Done

I love creating and designing products for the art/craft community. It is always a fun, creative challenge to come up with new ideas and to then turn these ideas into reality. Designing has become a passion of mine and a process that I am fortunate to be able to repeat many times each year.

It is important to me to always be developing as a designer and to never produce a product simply for the sake of making sales. I always want my releases to be inspiring, unique and new. It is with that in mind that I created my newest sets of stamps with PaperArtsy. 

My earlier releases with the company were primarily designed directly from elements within my mixed media artwork. My two newest sets are instead developed from my photography. Each stamp started with an image taken on my travels which I then digitally altered to bring you a more useable design. The trick here is finding images that are both unique, interesting and with a good amount of contrast. Thought it would be interesting to take you behind the scenes and to share a few before, during and afters.

NEW: The Beehive

Vintage Beeswax Baked Texture from Emerald Creek is a translucent blend of clear & multi-toned yellow and brown powders which, when heated, fuse together to add an antiqued look to any surface. Of the 7 embossing powder flavors that made up our first release, this is the "clear" best seller. 

With multiple layers of full surface coverage, Vintage Beeswax creates a faux encaustic look. 

This technique requires more applications than is typical for traditional embossing powders. As a result, people kept asking for a larger jar of VB. 

Ask and you shall receive. The beehive: 120grams of Baked Texture heaven. More than 7 times the size of the original jar.

It is always exciting to see how artists use my products to create art and that is definitely the case when the artist is the company boss. Leandra Franich who, along with Mark Franich, runs PaperArtsy has made a wonderfully layered artwork using one of my just-released, PaperArtsy stamp set.

JOURNAL JARGON FOUR

Which type of creative soul are you? What words best describe your creative direction? Are you a Traveler, Voyager, Seeker, Wanderer or Explorer always on a creative quest? Or perhaps you are more of an Illusionist, Inventor, Alchemist or Magician, making art magically appear. Maybe you are a Rebel or Revolutionary, using your art to make a change. You could be the Bohemian, Gypsy, Dreamer or Wayfarer, with an ever changing creative voice. Perhaps it is all about personal expression and you are in fact a Storytelller,  or Archivist. But no matter who you are, there is no doubt in my mind that you are an Artist.

We all have a story to tell. And for that we need language. Sometimes a photograph, a paint stroke, or a collage is the perfect vocabulary. But at other times, we need the perfect word. Take a look, as you just might find it here.

New: PaperArtsy Stamp Sets

All your stamp lovers out there...I am excited to share my two newest stamp sets from PaperArtsy. 

The majority of my stamps with PA have been designed around elements that are part of my mixed media artwork. These represent a new direction for me and are all taken from my own photography from my travels.  

Eclectica Seth Apter Set 09 (ESA09)

The images from Set 09 were taken in the United States, the UK and in Australia. Clockwise from the upper-left, these are computer-altered photographs of a vintage game board, a typewriter keypad, a stack of paint cans, and an artist flat file.

This artwork was made using all 4 stamps, each in a different way.

Eclectica Seth Apter Set 10 (ESA10)

Images in Set 10 were created from photographs taken in the UK and the United States. Plus there is a stamp from a photo of a vintage, latin text -- cause you cannot have enough text stamps of course. Images, clockwise from upper-left are from photographs of a wish-wall of tags, latin text, a gas pump sign, a leafless tree and some 3D letters spelling out a favorite phrase of mixed media artists both near and far.

This artwork uses all but one stamp from set 10.

NEW PaperArtsy Stamp Sets

Hot off the (rubber) press: I have just released 2 new stamp sets with PaperArtsy. I designed this collection, which builds on 2 previously-released sets from last year, based on a mashup of elements from original art that I have made. With the edition of some new elements, words, and random grungy elements, they are now ready for ink!

All stamps are deeply etched, red rubber cling and perfect for mixed media art. I think they capture the detail, dimension and texture from the original work very well. They are available now from my online shop. You can see more artwork using these stamps from myself and other artists on the PaperArtsy blog.

NEW PaperArtsy Acrylic Paint

The palette grows. I am so happy to announce the release of my newest custom colors of paint from PaperArtsy. This paint is Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylic and is among the 100+ colors in the line. It has a matte finish, dries lightening fast, and - perhaps best of all - will not destroy any pen/marker you use to mark it up. The paints in the line range in opacity, from translucent to semi-opaque to opaque.

Today's release includes 2 all new sets of 4 unique paint colors each. Coming up with the names was (almost) as fun as coming up with the colors. These colors are available now in my online shop. You can see the announcement on the PaperArtsy blog here.

Winter Palette

Venice Blue (opaque): the space between purple and blue

Glacier Ice (opaque): a soft, pale blue with a hint of purple

Spanish Mulberry (opaque): a pinky plum (or is that a plumy pink?)

Steel Grey (opaque): a cool shade of grey that works well with the blues

Summer Palette

Blue Lagoon (semi-opaque): a deep, tropical blue-green

Butter (opaque): a light, soft yellow with a crisp finish

Magic Moss (opaque): a cool and bright grassy green. mix with blues for turquoise

Double Denim (opaque): the color of your favorite pair of jeans

These new colors fit right in the pocket with my 2 sets from last year.

Autumn Palette

Buff (opaque): an off white neutral, perfect for paint mixing

Midnight (opaque): the darkest of blues with a green tone added

Terracotta (translucent): a translucent, rusty orange

Mahogany (semi-opaque): a cool, dark red-brown

Spring Palette

Smoked Paprika (translucent): a warm, translucent, spicy orange

Green Patina (semi-opaque): the color of aged copper

Key Lime (semi-opaque): a light yellow with lime green tones

Mud Splat (opaque): a cool brown. no more need to worry about making mud when you paint
